Item description for Spiritually Dysfunctional: Being the True and Amazing Story of How a Confirmed Jewish Atheist and His Seriously Catholic Wife Explore the Meaning of Life, ... Ideas) (Capital Ideas) (Capital Currents) by Fred Singer...

A good laugh for millions of spiritually challenged Americans (almost 80 percent of us, according to Newsweek), who are searching for deeper meaning in our lives. Humorist and Jewish-atheist, professor of history Fred Singer and his devout Catholic wife Becky have been arguing over just such issues during their almost thirty theologically stormy years of marriage. And that's why Fred has written his offbeat but ultimately serious Spiritually Dysfunctional. He explores life's meaning not only through his own "mixed" marriage and questioning mind, but also through the lives of real characters--like his demented old uncle; the Great Minds of the Past; and an odd assortment of other characters from the Bronx--each of whom illustrates or feeds into Fred s religion-spirituality-salvation paradigm. Through the thoroughly entertaining stories of this quirky cast of characters--Spiritually Dysfunctional travels not a dry, hard road to enlightenment, but a thoughtful path of humor, memoir, tragedy, history, psychology, and philosophy to become a true affirmation that our quest for significance is, in fact, a vital and worthy one. Or to put it succinctly, Spiritually Dysfunctional is Traveling Mercies on a Zen motorcycle to find out why Bad Things Happen to Good People.

A Spirited Look at the Big Questions in Life  Mar 23, 2007
This book is a surprise! I laughed, I cried, I stayed up all night debating religious questions like "Why DO bad things happen to people?" "Is there a spirit that guides us?" How could Fred's and Becky's mixed religious marriage have survived so long when they seem so different -- Jewish atheist and devout Catholic? But Fred seems to cover every conceivable argument for and against faith with humor but also earnest questioning. An amazing journey and a lot of great characters!Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson
