Reviews - What do customers think about Prayer Road?
East Timor joins the Olympic Family Oct 19, 2006
Prayer Road is a true story. It tells the tale of the world's newest nation, East Timor, as it recovers from the violence that rocked its independence in 1999. One of the United Nations' mission staff takes on the role of getting East Timorese Athletes into the Sydney Olympic Games, one of its first steps on the road to nationhood. The story follows the courageous efforts of the four Olympians (a boxer, a weightlifter, and two marathon runners) and their UN mentor. The story looks at the important role that sport plays in society, and how it can be a factor in reconciliation in a post conflict environment.
Prayer Road introduces the reader to a wide range of characters, from members of the International Olympic Committee who offer a goal and hope to the athletes, to the Timorese Olympians, to turf protecting bureaucrats, to Non Governmental Organizations in a war like environment.
The fact that Prayer Road is a true story makes the read more compelling. The characters all exude personality, and speak of their own experiences in becoming Olympians.
