Item description for The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Francis Collins & Francis S. Collins...
Overview A head of the Human Genome Project and former atheist presents a scientific argument for the existence of God, revealing how science can support faith by citing the areas of nature that can and cannot be fully explained by Darwinian evolution.
Publishers Description Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world's leading scientists -- yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God and scripture. Dr. Collins has resolved the dilemma that haunts everyone who believes in God and respects science. Faith in God and faith in science can be harmonious -- not separately but together, combined into one worldview. For Collins, science does not conflict with the Bible, science enhances it.
The Language of God makes the case for God and for science. Dr. Collins considers and dismisses several positions along the spectrum from atheism to young-earth creationism -- including agnosticism and Intelligent Design. Instead, he proposes a new synthesis, a new way to think about an active, caring God who created humankind through evolutionary processes.
He explains his own journey from atheism to faith, and then takes listeners on a stunning tour of modern science to show that physics, chemistry, and biology can all fit together with belief in God and the Bible. The Language of God is essential for anyone who wonders about the deepest questions of all: Why are we here? How did we get here? And what does life mean?

Reviews - What do customers think about The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief?
Untrue. Mar 30, 2007
As much as I have always hoped that something like this would come, I am deeply saddened by Francis's attempt. Deeply saddened.
The theologisms are biased and unsupported. Altruism has been solved. The bridge between science and religion remains incomplete, and after reading this book, what pitiful attempts I myself have of my personal bridge have crumbled to dust.
This is not the ray of sunshine I was hoping for.
I doubt there ever will be.

I don't know how to rate this item because this site sent it to the wrong address. They also stated in an email that they would reimburse me for it, but never have.
Bridging a Chasm Mar 27, 2007
This book is about helping the millions of people that are simply puzzled about the whole concept of evolution and its relationship to God. There is a chasm that exists between science and religion due to the absolute rejection of science in favor of pride and ignorance by Christianity hundreds of years ago. This gap is still being closed and this book is another attempt to help bridge that chasm.
This book is not of the same genre as young Earth creationists; so if you're looking for another book that espouses those shaky tenents you will be dissappointed. This book doesn't ignore the power of faith, just blind faith. This book also does not support intelligent design which is at the other end of the spectrum. This book is squarely in the middle fending off attacks from all sides (usually an indicator that its worth reading!)
If you're tired of fighting evolution, and know that there is hard science behind it, this book can help you verbalize your thoughts in order to go out and face the onslaught of anti-evolutionary philosophy. If you're a die hard Henry Morris follower, you'll be sorely disgusted, and if your an intelligent design fan, this book may be enough to challenge some of those theories but not shake your entire foundation to the ground.
Great book! Mar 26, 2007
This book caught me by surprise. I was not expecting a book from a Christian Man to support Darwin. I am grateful to live close to a few medical research labs where I have access to discuss Creation and evolution with some true bio-scientist. Most believe deeply in (and go to great detail) explaining how they support Creationism. So this book has been a hot topic. I am a Engineer and a Christian. I just (week before) finished reading, "Tornado in a Junkyard" that supports Creation-ism and I really enjoy Ken Hamm as well as Dr. Hovind. My point is, I do believe in Creation-ism, but the "God gap" theory was very interesting. I sure would have like to have seen some actual physical pictures of the transition fossils and other things Dr. Collins mentions. This is a very good book, I highly recommend it and I would love to see more stuff from Dr. Collins.
