Reviews - What do customers think about Devotional Classics (Revised)?
Exceptional devotional Feb 21, 2007
We've started using this book as a weekly devotional. How could this book be anything buy exceptional with such exceptional contributors?!
Classic Jan 11, 2007
This book will help you get in touch with early churchmen as they tried to reach God. They pour out their hearts as best they know how to experience God. Be careful to not get caught up in all their exploits. We live in another age. Our culture is far removed. Be careful that you seek to understand their context as you read the many different authors within the devotional.
Anti-Ecumenists should read with caution... Aug 6, 2006
I've only just got this book, and so far, have found it a very good read and well Bible-based. However, it may bother or even offend somebody who may be looking for a book that's exclusively from their own Christian denomination (i.e., a Catholic looking for a devotional made exclusively from and for Catholics); the excerpts in this devotional are from both Catholic and Protestant writers from the past!
If you get bothered about different denominations together in one book, but you still want to read it, then do so with a grain of salt!
Otherwise, go ahead and see if you like it! It's up to you!
One of the best books I've ever been given! Jun 12, 2006
Not sure what to read - read this. My wife and I were given this book as a wedding gift, and I think it's the best gift we got! Devotional Classics is broken into six sections: Preparing for Spiritual Life, The Prayer-Filled Life, The Virtuous Life, The Spirit-Empowered Life, The Compassionate Life, and The Word-Centered Life. Each section has excerpts from outstanding authors and their works - from recent authors like Dallas Willard and Watchman Nee to the great saints of the faith including Jonathan Edwards, Francis de Sales, St. Augustine, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas a Kempis, William Law, John Bunyan, John Wesley, and Francis of Assisi to name a few!
While the entire book is 350 pages, each selection is only about 5 - 7 pages long...so the book is broken down into manageable reading segments - but the great treat is that this book exposes the reader to over 50 of the greatest Christian writers of all time - and gives you a brief excerpt from one of their works. If you like what you read, you can always get more by ordering and reading the entire book on your own. This is a great gift for a high school or college aged student and beyond (hey, makes a great wedding gift). On the difficulty scale from 1 - 10, Devotional Classics is about a 7 - not overwhelming, but some of these authors take a little more time to read and understand. The book is about $10.00 - but for that price, you're really getting over 50 books...so, think of it as an outstanding investment into your continued spiritual development. There is a sister book entitled Spiritual Classics, which I've just ordered, and it looks outstanding as well.
Our Legacy Sep 18, 2005
"Devotional Classics" is the companion volume to Foster's "Spiritual Classics." Foster and Smith designed it as weekly devotional guide to 52 classic historical authors on the devotional life. They catalog their readings using the Renovare conceptualization of six strands in historical spirituality: the prayer-filled life, the virtuous life, the Spirit-empowered life, the compassionate life, the word-centered life, and the sacramental life.
These six categories along with their 52 representative authors combined with the introductions by Foster and Smith, offer readers a fine introduction to Christian devotional thinking. As with "Spiritual Classics," the snippets are at times hard to fully digest out of the context of their original writings. Hopefully, readers will be motivated to read many of the 52 author's full works.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction", "Soul Physicians," and "Spiritual Friends."
