Item description for WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!) by Ewout Dorman, Cassandra Wilkins & Wouter Vanstiphout...
The International Building Exhibition (IBE) Rotterdam-Hoogvliet opens in 2001 with WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!) as its leading theme. One of the largest obstacles for contemporary urban planning and urbanism is the pervasiveness of the so-called NiMBY (Not in My Backyard) phenomenon, which symbolizes the urban individual's fear of collectivity, of strangers, and of the new. WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!) is the motto of a new design and organization culture that seeks to address this attitude in order to realize new possibilities in urbanism. It stands for an urban ethics in which changes and additions--particularly where encounters between public and private space are concerned--are seen as a potential source of enrichment for the individual resident. The objective of the Rotterdam-Hoogvliet IBE, which will continue through 2010, is to increase international recognition for Rotterdam's urban planning and architecture, and to make a crucial contribution to the redefinition of Hoogvliet--a model for postwar urban planning--as a sustainable and attractive living and working environment for the 21st century. The scale, complexity, and duration of the urban restructuring of Hoogvliet make it an exemplary test case for the future of the modern city--and WiMBY! explores this future with intelligence, beauty, and depth. Hardcover, 120 pages, 6.25 x 6.25 inches, 31 color and 34 b&w illustrations.
