Continuing History of JG 1 at War! Jan 20, 2006
The mid-war history of JG 1 is covered in this, the second volume of Eric Mombeek's wonderful history.
With the growing Allied air offensive in 1943, the air war takes on a grimmer tone for JG 1, the Luftwaffe's premier air defense units. JG 1 pilots such as Hans Philipp, Dietrich Wickop, Gunther Specht and Karl-Heinz Leesmann now face the formidable challenge of tackling 8th Air Force formations of B-17s and B-24s. Various tactics and weapons such as air-to-air bombing and rockets are introduced as JG 1 and other units attempt to find the key to breaking up the bomber formations. This period is marked by stunning victories by JG 1 FW 190 and Bf 109 pilots along with increasing losses to U.S. escort fighters.
As with volume One, this book features many first-person accounts of JG 1 combats. The text is illustrated with over 280 photos of aircrew and aircraft and 30 color profiles by Tom Tullis and Dennis Davison. Very nice package for the price!
