Reviews - What do customers think about ESV Thinline Bible, Premium Calfskin Leather, Cordovan, Red Letter Text?
Soft & Supple Jun 22, 2008
My copy is without the stitching. The Cordovan skin is beautiful & so soft & supple. The binding is a bit stiff (compared to Cambridge & RL Allan... which might not be exactly fair, I guess.) However, I do notice some "hair-line-cracks" on the cover. Not sure if this is normal. Also, I can't get the feeling over that the cover "feels" fragile & delicate. Hopefully this is not true. At least it is comforting to know this beautiful calfskin version has Crossway's life-time guarantee on material & workmanship.

Nothing to say but outstanding quality and craftsmenship. A pure joy to read and study.
A good choice Oct 23, 2007
There are a number of things to consider when buying any Bible. Generally these things fall into two categories the quality of the materials that make up the physical Bible and the arragement of the printed text. Let me address the second of these first. While it is true that this version does not contain cross references, it does have footnotes. In the Old Testament, those footnotes contain alternate readings or translations of a particular word or phrase. The New Testament contains in addition to those, footnotes that give references to direct quotes from the Old Testament and parallel references in the Gospels. This is not a study Bible or even a reference Bible and that is not all bad. Sometimes we can get distracted from the text with all of the cross references and explanitory notes. The text is not large but it is very clear. I'm over 60 and read with bifocals but I still have no trouble reading either the text or the footnotes.
As far as the quality of construction is concerned, the calfskin is very pleasant to the touch. It is soft and supple. The paper is thin and at times the text shows through from the page on the back. That is not much of a problem though. I have found with any red letter addition, the type in red does not always match up horizontally with the type in black. The red always seems to be slightly lower than the black. That too is not much of a problem. I don't know what type of binding this Bible has, but it does come with a life time guarantee.
All in all, I'm am very pleased with this Bible. I used it as my primary Bible. I also have a truetone slimline version that I use on trips. It too is very nice. I highly recommend this Bible.
Bindery Problems May 15, 2007
I purchased this and loved it -- but when my husband looked at it he noticed something: the binding was printed wrong - it's about 1/2 inch off center. But then we realized that it wasn't printed off-center; in fact, the whole leather cover was stitched/glued wrong, off-center. In essence, when you put this Bible on the table, and then look straight down on it from above, you see the back cover hangs over about 1/4 - 1/2 inch. That part is not as noticeable as the words on the back of the binding.
Needless to say, I am exchanging it -- after waiting to get this Bible and being so excited about this lifelong investment, it is too bad I'm going to have to wait even longer to get it right.
Has anyone else had problems of binding like I did?
I may change to 5 stars if I can get the Bible in correct condition.
Quality Workmanship. Excellent Translation. May 13, 2007
This is a wonderful Bible. It combines the ESV translation, with excellent workmanship in a Leather Bible.
The leather is exceptionally soft. The colour a lovely deep russet red. The presentation box is excellent, featuring a magnetic flap, which ensures the box closes well. Sometimes when buying a Bible, I do not keep the box, but this is one which I will definitely keep - and keep the Bible in it, when it is not in use.
The Bible is thinline, but still substantial, e.g. not so thin that the font is too small! Indeed, the font is easy to read and the typesetting shows up well on the excellent quality paper - which is thin, yet remains opaque, so no bleeding through for those who wish to make notations or highlight verses in their Bibles. This is also a Red Letter edition - the words of the Lord are in Red - which is not the case with the larger, full-size, ESV Premium Calfskin edition - which is a black letter edition.
The only shortcoming for me is that this is not a reference Bible - however, it does have a substantial Concordance, with some 12,000 entries. I know it is fairly expensive, compared with some other leather Bibles, but don't let that stop you. Buying and owning this Bible should give you many hours of joy - from holding the wonderful, rich leather in your hands to reading the Word of the Lord in the accurate ESV translation.
