An Amazingly Inspiring Read Jun 25, 2008
Mrs. Head was my Advanced English teacher during my sophomore year of high school. She's an inspiration, and I was extremely honored to be able to write an article about her published work. I have quoted the article below, in full text. It was featured in the Northwest Alabamian newspaper:
"Area educator provides comforting road map toward Heaven By Joseph M. Orellano Staff Writer LYNN - Since the dawn of humanity, mankind has struggled with that eternal, burning question, "How do I get to heaven when I die?" One of Winston County's daughters has provided a simplistic, comforting, layman's guide toward answering that question. Emily Head's "Heaven: How to Get There" is basically a road map providing a solid, simple understanding of the requirements it takes to get to heaven for die-hard scripture quoters and those misguided, lost sheep, alike. Emily graduated with a BS in English in 1995, and then followed-up with her Masters in education in 1997. That same year, she officially began her career as a teacher at Carbon Hill Junior High School. Then, from 1998-99, she taught students at Lynn High School in her home town of Lynn. The last move she made with her teaching career was in 2000, when she had her first year teaching English and advanced English at Haleyville High School. Her last year of teaching was 2004. It was that year that her mother, Janice Wakefield, passed away. It was the saddest time in Emily's life, but it was also then that her relationship with God was solidified. "I always knew that God loved me, but I didn't know how deeply he loved me until I lost my mother. It was the saddest time in my life," she said. Then, just seven weeks after her mother's passing, Emily's mood did a belly flop, as her son James was born, turning that experience into one of the happiest of her life. "I didn't know how to handle it. Through it all, I learned of the most merciful, comforting God imaginable... My relationship with God is easily explained like this: I am forgiven through Christ. That says most everything," Head said. She noted it was then that she began to use writing as an outlet for the flux of emotions she experienced. "I had always wanted to write a book. I had written on and off a bit. But this project... God gave me this project to work on after my mother died. My thoughts were on heaven anyway, because she was there," Emily recalled about the time before she began writing the book. "I wanted to research (heaven) and find out everything I could. And while doing that, I realized that this is what people needed to know the most - how to get to heaven." Emily explained that her reasoning for writing about the topic, rather than a theologian, was she believed she could make it more understandable for the average, everyday person. "Life is so uncertain. I came to realize that mother was very young when she died. It always happened to everybody else - but that time, it happened to us," Emily recalled. "Life is indeed short, and we're not guaranteed tomorrow. It was that fact that everybody needs to know." Emily recalled several times when her students would come to her seeking answers and guidance about the great beyond. "In my seven years of teaching, anytime a student asked about heaven or getting there, a hush would fall over the entire room, and that is a very rare thing in school," Emily chuckled. "They would ask me things like `Why do we have to die in the first place?' `What does heaven look like?' So I also wanted to write this for them, too." Emily explained that everything she writes about in the book is backed-up with scripture, adding that doing that was the only way for her to feel comfortable with writing about the topics in the first place. "There are some people who go around passing out little pieces of paper with scriptures written on them in attempts to get people to submit, repent, and believe. That's all well and good, but that doesn't really tell an individual anything they need to know about getting to heaven. I go a lot deeper in the scriptures, telling individuals all about heaven, and there is a short chapter on hell." As a child, Emily attended one too many fire and brimstone revival services, she explained. From doing such, she was terrified of hell, and all thoughts of hell. She added that these revivals did not do much in terms of clarifying her understanding of getting to heaven instead. "Another reason I wrote this book is because it was so difficult for me to understand how to get to heaven," Emily said. "It shouldn't be that difficult. It's a simple thing, really, but people try to make it a lot harder than it is. "I dare say that 75 percent of the world believes that when they die and stand before God, there will be a scale with good deeds versus bad deeds. They think that if the good deeds outweigh the bad, then they'll get admitted into heaven. And `Can I get to heaven by just being good, or religious?' - that's a resounding no!" Head said that it isn't about man's deeds that determine entrance to heaven. Instead, it is about what Jesus Christ has done for the world. "It's so simple that people make it difficult," stated Head. One other reason for writing this book, Head explained, is that it is a witnessing tool for people to use. "Sometimes it is very uncomfortable to walk up to someone and ask them, `Do you know how to get to heaven?' This book is a very comfortable way to get heaven in the hands of others." Head will be doing two book signings this month. The first will be this Saturday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Praise Corner, in the Village East Shopping Center in Haleyville. The next will be April 21, at Waldenbooks in the Jasper Mall from noon to 2 p.m. Head said that if anyone is interested in having her come speak at their church, or other group function, she can be contacted via e-mail by sending a message to [...]. Copies of Heaven: How to Get There are available at Praise Corner, Waldenbooks, Berean Book Store, Lifeway Christian Book Stores, Tate Book Store, and on the Internet by visiting [...] Head's book has been in high demand, and as such, has caused online customers to experience slight, temporary delays in shipments. For the time being, Head will continue to nurture her children, but she says that she looks to continue teaching in the future once her children get a little older. She also pointed out that she is very much looking forward to releasing more books in the future."
I could write so much more about Mrs. Head and this wonderful piece of literature, but I will have to summarize it all for you, though it still won't do it proper justice...
This is an amazing book. If you are a Child of God, if you are a Christian person, or if you find yourself to be one of those who are Lost in this world, or even if you aren't religious, or are curious in your eternal salvation through Jesus Christ - you absolutely need to read this book. I love it. It's great, and a very quick, completely enjoyable read. Buy it now. You will not regret it!
