Reviews - What do customers think about Therese of Lisieux's ""Little Way"": For Everyone (Classics for Everyone)?

"Unremarkable" Doctor of the Church  Feb 3, 2008
In the introduction to her modern version of Thérèse of Lisieux's Little Way, Elizabeth Ruth Obbard explains how this 19th century saint came to write about her simple decision to live as a child of God. Her life was short and seemingly unremarkable. Thérèse, also known as The Little Flower, joined the Carmelites at age 15, and lived out the remaining nine years of her life in the convent that also housed three of her sisters. At their request, she wrote of her childhood and the Little Way she used to guide convent newcomers. Obbard, herself Carmelite nun, has drawn from Thérèse's own writings and other documents to bring us the story, updating the diction while preserving the original style. The simple message, Obbard writes, is that God cares for each one of us in a special way.

The author explains that Thérèse did not and does not fit into common ideas of saintliness. She did not act in marvelous ways or follow harsh practices such as extreme fasting and wearing a hair shirt. She did not minister to the poor and sick, like Mother Teresa or march into battle like Joan of Arc, Obbard writes, yet she was named a Doctor of the Church. "She just lived quietly and faithfully in her convent doing the daily things that had to be done and getting on with her life."

The Little Way stresses the importance of faith, prayer, and God's unconditional love. "My way isn't about feeling good, it's about believing in the words of Jesus and putting them into practice no matter what. Even though I continue to pray I don't get a lot of consolation in my prayer." Thérèse expressed gratitude for knowing she was weak and fragile, "otherwise I'd be ashamed of the times I sleep in prayer." Obbard describes the saint's rejection of the commonly held view of God as strict disciplinarian: "That sort of thing never helped me."
