Item description for The Cinematic Works of Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Book & DVD by Eija-Liisa Ahtila...
In Eija-Liisa Ahtila's films and videos, ordinary suffering inhabits the bodies of her female subjects and takes over, spilling into such neurotic activities as crawling on a freeway overpass, lying face up in a puddle of mud, acting like a dog or blocking up all the windows and doors of a house so as to keep out distractions. This volume on the cinematic works of Ahtila aims not only to introduce the spectator to her narrative-driven psychological films but also to consider the working process of an artist and filmmaker. Published here for the first time is a complete set of Ahtila's original film manuscripts plus a two-hour DVD with all of her film work to the present, presenting an all-too-rare opportunity to view the work of a time-based artist outside the exhibition space. Included are Me/We, Okay, Gray, If 6 was 9, Today, Consolation Service and Love is a Treasure. Other, 6 x 10 in./25 pgs / 0 color 10 BW0 duotone 0 DVD~ Item D20284

Reviews - What do customers think about The Cinematic Works of Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Book & DVD?
Magnificent cinema, breathtaking art Jul 31, 2004
Eija Liisa Ahtila's DVD collection The Cinematic Works is an amazing release--her challenging and poetic short-format works focus on the instability of reality in the face of losing love, innocence, or one's own mind, and plays this disjuncture against the heightened or altered reality one faces when losing one's self in the cinema (which in and of itself is akin to a disassociative disorder). These works have heretofore been available for viewing only in the context of museums and galleries, and this boxed set provides wider audiences access to one of the great emerging contemporary artists and film-making talents.
The book accompanying the DVD (which provides only a transcript of the shooting scripts for each film on the disc) is not as essential as the Fantasized Persons and Taped Conversations text, which gives Eija-Liisa's oeuvre a more thorough going-over.
A word of caution: the DVD in this set is in PAL format, which is not viewable on standard American DVD players.
