Item description for The Prayer-given Life by Edward S. Gleason...

Overview
Not just for church and other public occasions, the Book of Common Prayer is an incredible resource for private and intimate conversations with God. It gives us rich words and phrases with which to pray, words that can slowly change our hearts and minds. Throughout his life as a priest, parent, teacher, head of school, and publisher, Ted Gleason has had thousands of conversations about prayer with children, teenagers, young adults, the middle-aged, and the elderly. This book is the fruit of those conversations as well as a love song to the words and cadences of the Book of Common Prayer. Gleason shows us how his long immersion in the prayers of the Eucharist and Morning Prayer have been pathways to a deeper understanding of the presence of God. A gifted storyteller, Gleason has also filled this book with the vivid stories of others who pray and what happens when they do. He urges us to return to the practice of the presence of God every day of our lives, of which this book is a living and vivid example.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Prayer-given Life?

Pay Attention  Nov 21, 2007
Mr. Gleason and his wife were witnesses to an ordinary, extraordinary moment. While driving home one evening they saw an owl in the garden. They watched it for a while. The evening continued. He uses this moment to show us the importance of watchfulness and silence. "The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him." (Habakkuk 2:20, BCP 20)" Using stories as tools for reflection on prayers from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, Mr. Gleason not only brings the Prayer Book more fully alive but he shows us the nearness of God. This book is just as valuable to non-Episcopalians. We all are reminded of the nearness of God, of the ease of prayer, of the richness available to one who endeavors to make of her or his life one full of an awareness of God. I have been unwilling to put this book down. It is as if I am feeding on rich nectar. I feel nourished and made more alive. I recommend this book highly for anyone who desires to live a prayer-filled life.

You Don't Have To Be Religious  Nov 15, 2007
Edward Gleason - perhaps because he has been a schoolmaster and a fund raiser in addition to a parish priest - knows prayer as so much richer and flesh-colored than the usual parochial pussilaminous nonsense that all but the most pious find off-putting or irrelevant.

This book has now been on the shelf in our bathroom (where most serious reading and reflecting happens) for two months. My wife and I - whose literary tastes are chalk and cheese - have both spent more time than we ought in there because we have been caught up in the touching immediacy of Gleason's stories.

That he links them to prayer - an ancient and sometimes offensive mystery - is genius.

So, I guess I do pray after all. I just didnt know to call it that.

Get a copy and put it in your bathroom. Better put a timer next to it or you'll never get your work done.

A Powerful Message Affirming Prayer  Nov 14, 2007
This book does something no other book on prayer has done, demonstrated the power of prayer through the stories of everyday people. Using the Book of Common Prayer as the loose outline, Gleason weaves a poignant portrait of people for whom prayer has become an integral part of their lives. If you like the "Purpose Driven Life" now read the Prayer Given Life to bring the message full circle. It will touch both your heart and your soul.
