Essential Role of Scripture in Catholic Life Apr 3, 2005
This volume of essays, based on a 2002 symposium at St. Michael's College, relates scripture to four fields or special interest in today's world: moral theology, spirituality, women studies, and pastoral care. All of these theological/scriptural messages are clear and thoroughly relevant to today's Christians.
Author Frank Matera, Ph.D., compares the moral teachings of Jesus and Paul, then demonstrates their foundational role in current Christian moral life. Bonnie Thurston, Ph.D., addresses women studies in the context of Romans 16, which tells us "that women performed the same functions as men in some of the churches within the sphere of influence of the apostle Paul, and that he approved of this."
John Shea, S.T.D., relates "dynamics of pastoral care that can be embraced by scriptural study...and driven by a consciousness profoundly influenced by the biblical revelation." And in the final section, Wilfrid Harrington, O.P., S.S.L., offers "a snapshot of God" from the story of Jonah, in which the Creator's "refined sense of humor" is evident.
