Reviews - What do customers think about Life: Christmas Around the World (Life (Life Books))?
Great gift (esp. when you don't know what else to give) Feb 15, 2008
Every Christmas, the toughest giftees on my list are my brother-in-law's parents. Suffice it to say, I have to find them something that wouldn't even offend "The Church Lady," that is within the agreed-upon per-family-member budget, and that maybe, just maybe, they might actually enjoy.
Well, after years of unused picture frames, cast aside coffee mugs, and polite sighs of "What a lovely thought, dear," I finally got a hit. "Life: Christmas Around the World" is just the right combination of "wholesome," "affordable," and "interesting" that I've been looking for. My brother-in-law's mother was enthralled and actually read it cover-to-cover while the grandkids were playing with their new toys. Score!
As for a review of the book itself, I recommend it high(ish)ly. It's primarily a collection of colorful photos of (guess what) Christmas celebrations around the world. Think of it as a mini-lesson on one of the more charming ways in which our world's cultures differ, and a celebration of those difference. As other reviewers have noted, it would've been nice if there had been more text to explain what was going on in those lovely pictures. So, the book loses a star on that point. Nevertheless, "Life: Christmas Around the World" makes a great gift, the pictures really are beautiful, and the price is right.
Glossy and gorgeous...but not much content. Dec 8, 2004
I had harbored high hopes for this volume. As a publication of LIFE I was prepared for a bevy of amazing, beautifully-shot photographs...and was far from disappointed. Stunning pictures of European villages, Asian scenes, and American Yules cover each page, thrilling the beholder with views of how Christmas is celebrated in various locations across the globe.
However, I was very displeased at the lack of prose. Explanations of what makes a Czech, Italian, Korean, Australian, or Chilean Christmas unique would surely have enhanced the photos of them. Apparently the dearth of text also called for the absence of an index or other locator tool, which I consider a grave weakness for any non-fiction monograph.
Besides dazzling the eye with the highly glossed gorgeousness of its color pictures, I would recommend LIFE to make their books more worthwhile to readers by actually placing within them something to READ.
