Item description for Know Fear: Facing Life's Six Most Common Phobias by Ed Young...
Overview Fear is an unavoidable part of the experience of being human. Anxiety, fear, and phobia encompass us as we embrace the ever-changing, fast-paced technological, and seemingly unstable environment we live in today. And because we are taught that it is weak to show fear, that cowards are despised, and that being a hero means knowing no fear, we try to hide our fears and anxieties. We condemn ourselves and our self-image takes a nosedive with our self-esteem. But Texas pastor and radio personality Ed Young Jr. thinks we are working from a skewed paradigm concerning fear. The way to get back on track is through God. The phrase "fear not" is mentioned over 189 times in the Bible, and God has set forth clear, relevant principles for overcoming anxiety. This book offers a radical perspective on much misunderstood emotion.

More About Ed Young
Caldecott medalist Ed Young was born in Tientsin, China, and brought up in Shanghai. He cites the philosophy of Chinese painting as an inspiration for much of his work. "A Chinese painting is often accompanied by words," he explains; "they are complementary. There are things that words do that pictures never can, and likewise, there are images that words can never describe."
Mr. Young has been illustrating children's books for more than twenty years and has won many awards. He received the 1990 Caldecott Medal for his book Lon Po Po, and his much-lauded collaboration with anthologist Nancy Larrick, Cats Are Cats, was named one of the Ten Best Illustrated Books of 1988 by The New York Times.
Mr. Young studied at the University of Illinois, the Art Center of Los Angeles, and Pratt Institute in New York City. He and his family live in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Reviews - What do customers think about Know Fear: Facing Life's Six Most Common Phobias?
Great for a small group study. Oct 2, 2006
My study group discussed this book and it was very enlightening and comforting. Everyone fears something and this book covers most common fears such as loneliness and failure. It is reassuring to understand God's perspective and how He cares for us during suchtimes.
Another lousy Christian self-help book... Aug 31, 2006
My entire church was forced to read this book last fall as part of its teaching series. In a church of 1000+ people, I have not found one person who liked the book.
The author makes it seem as if we are all cripped by some common phobias and that we are paralyzed by fear. While some of his premises are fine, most of them are just generalizations and pure grabbing at straws.
Maybe this has some applicability for those who live in the Bible belt and who aren't too worldly, but for those of us who have been around the block, it's just another feeble Christian self-help book.
Very Comforting Read! Sep 14, 2004
I don't know why this book hasn't received more attention given the events of recent times. With familiarity and humor, Ed Young has a unique way of bringing us back to the basics of faith in times of fear and crisis. We have been sitting on the edge of our seats since 9/11, wondering what will happen next. And this book puts our fears in perspective and helps us see that, no matter what happens, God is still in control. An incredible help in uncertain times.
