A Sensitive Read For Children Jan 4, 2007
This is an ideal book for parents or teachers who like to read to or with children (probably most appropiate for ages 6-9). The stories are ostensibly about a child's interactions with animals but really deal as much with the complex feelings a child struggles with as he/she tries to comprehend the adult world, e.g. breaking rules that she/he doesn't even know exist. These feelings are further explored in a more comical form in the poems which accopany the stories. "Why Dogs Bark" is bound to produce both questions and giggles. Mr. Day has the unusual talent of being able to enter a child's way of thinking and tap into feelings that are not fully developed. I know Mr. Day personally and can attest to his sensitivity as an individual. I believe this sensitivity will come through to his young readers. Bill Freeman, retired school psychologist
