Item description for Stepping Into Joy: Your Guide To The Life You've Always Wanted by Dr Randall Green...
he Key To A New Beginning Unveiled Within In Stepping Into Joy, Dr. Randall Green bears his own soul in order to make clear the path he and countless others have taken to achieve authentic joy. In these pages you will discover a refreshing approach to our endless quest for spiritual fulfillment. Using the Twelve Steps of Recovery as the core solution to mankind's "quiet desperation," Dr. Green adds the spices of real-life stories, pithy slogans, humorous anecdotes, and a few "old Kentucky sayings" just for the fun of it. Building on the premise that addiction is a physical disease with a spiritual solution, the Twelve Steps are offered as "guides to progress" in the journey to spiritual wholeness. Although Randy Green is unashamedly committed to his Christian faith, the spiritual principles he extrapolates are non-partisan in application. This is not a book on religion. It is not a book for or against religion. This is a book about true spirituality and how to experience it amid the real stressors and challenges of today's post-modern culture. Regardless of the addictions, compulsive behaviors, or attachments that may plague our lives, we will be led closer and closer to the joy we all seek as we commit ourselves to living out these twelve spiritual principles one day at a time.

Actions speak louder..... Jul 16, 2009
Never heard of this guy (lie), Don't know what he's talking about (lie), Didn't expect him to write a book about it (lie)....But for sheer intimacy in a paragraph, for a disarming, easy to be around style of writing and for someone to read and hear until you get your own sponsor or mentor, Dr. Randy Green's, STEPPING INTO JOY, cannot be beat.
It's not the "doctor" or the "experience" part, but that he put it all together in a fashion that is almost standing there talking with you and telling you not to take yourself too seriously. Dr. Green makes sense to me in what he writes and as he tells us how he lives.
If you are hurtin' for certain, start here. He welcomes the reader, as he did me, into the lives of his families(like AA used to do long ago). If you need a newer and improved you, or are considering getting one, this book will be a great start getting there without committing a mortal sin or getting arrested. Dig It!
A book about beating addiction that will not work for everybody but it is worthwhile for everybody. Nov 3, 2008
Each victory over alcohol or drugs is an individual one, so there is no single path to recovery. However, the technique that has proven most effective is the twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. In this book psychotherapist and Christian minister Randall Green uses the statements of the twelve steps, alters the implementation description, includes statements from famous people and others that have faced addiction and adds some very folksy humor. In essence, it is the standard program that all people follow, but his interpretation adds rather than subtracts to the effectiveness. Some examples of the humor are:
*) A bulldog can whip a skunk but it ain't worth it *) Little Mary fell asleep in her third grade class. The teacher approached her after class and asked, "Mary, why did you go to sleep during the class today?" Mary said, "Teacher, last night when we was fast asleep- Pa heard as commotion out in the hen house. He grabbed his 12 gauge and went outside to see what it was that was causin' the commotion. Just about that time the time that Pa had a bead on whatever it was, `ole Blue come up behind Pa and stuck his old cold nose in the flap of Pa's long johns. And, teacher, we been up apicken' chickens all night long!"
As would be expected given the background of the author, the Christian religion is used extensively in setting down the treatment tactics given in this book. To his credit, the author is not fanatical about it, demonstrating an experienced streak of reality. Rather than simply saying it will all work with the proper amount of faith, he explains the problems of and near inevitability of relapse, even after extensive dry periods. My wife is a counselor for drug and alcohol addiction and she is always telling me that relapse is a fundamental part of the recovery process. This book will not work for everybody but it is worthwhile for everybody.
An instant classic! Oct 6, 2008
A very good book - profound and engaging! This easy-to-read volume takes the reader on an intimate journey through the 12 Steps of AA as experienced by the author. Each step is illuminated from the point of view of one who has lived it and who has helped show others the way for almost 30 years. In the process, we realize that the spiritual awakening promised by the 12 Steps is available to anyone who has been "wrestled down" by life's cares and troubles, whatever they are. I found encouragement for my own life journey; being reminded that there is always hope if you place your trust in that "higher power, whatever you understand it to be". Highly recommended! Thank you, Dr. Green!
Stick with the Winners Sep 26, 2008
Dr.Green and myself embarked on the recovery process after rehab, at the same time, in the same area, south Florida, and essentially with the same friends, his sponsor Roy especially. The book is a refreshing re-take and update on the Big Book and the Twelve and Twelve. Stepping into Joy is a great read especially for those that are reluctant to be convinced of their addiction. The ability to laugh at ourselves, and appreciate the humor of others is a sure sign that the recovery process has started. Best wishes to my very dear friend Randy, Tom S.
A little brother's perspective Sep 24, 2008
BOOK REVIEW Stepping into Joy is a personal step by step guide through the tried and proven but, to the new wayfarer, frightening and unfriendly, 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and similar addiction programs.
The leader of this pilgrimage is a seasoned veteran of both addiction and addiction counseling. For twenty-five years Dr. Green pastured churches in Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. As he tried to fight the devil in his ministry on the one hand, he was battling his own personal demons on the other. He eventually lost that battle and in the process lost his family, his reputation, his livelihood and his confidence.
After several years of partying and dying, living it up and living it down, he found his way to a path of life and joy. For over a quarter century now he has followed that path and has shown a multitude of others the way. The book is punctuated with personal experiences, humor, and, well, joy. It would serve profitably for any weary pilgrim looking for the way out.
