More About J. Vernon McGee
Dr. John Vernon McGee, Th.D., LL.D, (June 17, 1904 – December 1, 1988) was an ordained Presbyterian minister (PCUS) who later pastored an interdenominational church, a Bible teacher, theologian, and was also a radio minister.
Dr. McGee spent more than 50 years teaching the Bible on his "Thru the Bible" radio broadcast. He pastored for more than 40 years and has authored many best-selling books, including "Doctrine for Difficult Days".
He was born in Hillsboro, Texas. He graduated with his B.D. from Columbia Theological Seminary and his Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas.Dr. McGee's first church was located on a red clay hill in Midway, Georgia. He served Presbyterian churches in Decatur, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; and Cleburne, Texas before he moved with his wife to Pasadena, California, where he accepted a position at the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church.
He moved from Pasadena to Los Angeles and became the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in 1949, where he continued as pastor until 1970. McGee also served as chairman of the Bible department at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (a.k.a. Biola University) and as a visiting lecturer at Dallas Theological Seminary.
In 1967, he began broadcasting the Thru the Bible Radio Network program. In a systematic study of each book of the Bible, Dr. McGee took his listeners from Genesis to Revelation in a two and one-half year "Bible bus trip," as he called it. After retiring from the pastorate in January, 1970, and realizing that two and a half years was not enough time to teach the Bible, McGee completed another study of the entire Bible in a five-year period. Thru the Bible has been translated into over 100 languages and is broadcast on Trans World Radio throughout the world every weekday.
Dr. McGee continued many speaking engagements after he retired, refusing to be slowed by a bout of cancer from which he fully recovered. However, a heart problem surgically corrected in 1965 resurfaced, and he died in his sleep in 1988. After his death, the five-year program of Thru the Bible continues to air on over 400 radio stations in North America, is heard in more than 100 languages and is broadcast worldwide via radio, shortwave, and the Internet.
J. Vernon McGee was born in 1904 and died in 1988.

Reviews - What do customers think about Genesis through Revelation (Thru the Bible 5 Volume Set)?
J Vernon is great, just eat the meat but spit out the reformed bones Apr 26, 2008
J Vernon is great, just eat the meat but spit out the reformed bones. He can be a little too calvinistic at times, but he means well ;) I used to listen to him all the time when I drove a truck. I don't always agree with him but still we are all one body to encourage one another and Mr. McGee does this well in his teachings.
For those interested, I ran across all of his sermons from his radio broadcasts, his Complete Zipped Books from 434 HOURS :) of Thru The Bible Radio. [...]
A Wonderful Help Nov 24, 2007
This series is a wonderful help in studying the Bible. I believe Mr. McGee was given this insight by God to help other believers. I highly recommend it.
Good Set Jun 1, 2007
Remember Thru The Bible Radio? J Vernon McGee was one of my first teachers on radio after I first became a Christian. His clear, concise teaching was a great help to me in learning. He has a love for the written word of God, and a love for Jesus Christ. I don't think anyone can go wrong with J Vernon McGee's work. Even if you don't agree with everything he says, he is still worth listening to.
Knowledgeable Bible teachers, who love the Word as it is written literally are in short supply today. There are some, but most are Laodecean fluff, in my opinion. Men of McGee's ilk got down to the unvarnished truth and we need more like him!
Sharing the word Sep 26, 2005
My husband uses J. Vernon McGee's commentaries to aid him in understanding each book of the bible. He teaches our adult sunday school class. His understanding of each verse aids in our understanding....In the beginning we were getting each book at our local christian book store. We wanted the complete set of each book. It was much to expensive to buy them that way. We are happy with our purchase. It will aid us in sharing God's word with others. Thanks! Barbara J. Little
Wonderful addition to your library Aug 4, 2005
Even though I tend to stick with authors who only support the KJV, this author is very good. I don't agree with everything he says, but overall I enjoy reading the commentaries, they have been very helpful. I bought the N.T. for me and the entire set for a friend of mine. We both are very happy with them. I recommend these to anyone who truly wants to search the scriptures and learn God's word
