Item description for Judges & Ruth (The Preacher's Commentary, Volume 7) by David Jackman...
Overview For those on the firing line in pulpits, classes, study groups, and Bible fellowship clusters, here is a distinctly different kind of commentary. Mastering the Old Testament combines rich resources of the historical setting and textual interpretation with practical application to aid in contemporary Bible study. This commentary provides critical textual exposition, corollary verses or illustrations from other portions of the Bible, and classical or contemporary life-situation illustrations.
General editor Lloyd J. Ogilvie brings together a team of skilled and exceptional communicators to blend sound scholarship with life-related illustrations.
The design for the Preacher's Commentary gives the reader an overall outline of each book of the Bible. Following the introduction, which reveals the author's approach and salient background on the book, each chapter of the commentary provides the Scripture to be exposited. The New King James Bible has been chosen for the Preacher's Commentary because it combines with integrity the beauty of language, underlying Hebrew and Greek textual basis, and thought-flow of the 1611 King James Version, while replacing obsolete verb forms and other archaisms with their everyday contemporary counterparts for greater readability. Reverence for God is preserved in the capitalization of all pronouns referring to the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit. Readers who are more comfortable with another translation can readily find the parallel passage by means of the chapter and verse reference at the end of each passage being exposited. The paragraphs of exposition combine fresh insights to the Scripture, application, rich illustrative material, and innovative ways of utilizing the vibrant truth for his or her own life and for the challenge of communicating it with vigor and vitality.

Reviews - What do customers think about Judges & Ruth (The Preacher's Commentary, Volume 7)?
David Jackman is an awesome expositor Mar 2, 2009
I picked this up at a friends house and read the first 3 chapters. I could hardly put it down. Jackman is very good at commenting and expository teaching. I have listened to audio lectures and sermons of his so I know of his work. He and Dick Lucas are two of the best teachers to ever grace this earth, and anything these two men set out to do comes out excellent. The two of them started the Proclamation Trust, a great organization that teaches young pastors. The website has many free audio teachings available, you can't pass this up. Check it out.
As far as this book, I feel like I have already learned new things about the Book of Judges, yet I have been studying this book for over a decade as I find it fascinating. Jackman actually manages to teach me new things that I had never thought of. Like I said, I have only read the first 3 chapters, but I just purchased my own copy as I know i will not be satisfied until I have devoured it in it's entirety.
Also, this series, the Preachers Commentary, is great all around. James Philip on Numbers is another one that I would call 'Must Read'. These guys don't just gloss over things in this series, they give real anwers to the questions that pop up as you read the corrresponding bible book they are commenting on. Sinclair Ferguson on Daniel is another great book in this series.
For the cheap price of this book by Jackman, you cannot possibly be disappointed. Do yourself a favor and pick one up.
