A great Spiritual Adventure Sep 23, 2008
Defenders of the Breach is a wonderful spiritual allegory along the lines of Tolkien only for me, much more readable and more meaningful. At the start of the book I thought that this would be another "Lord of the Rings" which is great. But as I read I found the book to be a faster and more exciting read. I also found the spiritual truths to be powerful and deep. If you want to read a spiritual adventure book I highly recommend Defenders of the Breach.
Amazing Book! Jun 12, 2008
Wow! What an amazing book this is! It's been many years since I read a book with such hunger as I did Defenders of the Breach. It is exciting from beginning to end, with non-stop, heart-pounding action. Once you pick this book up, you can't put it down.
All the details of every situation are so vividly painted on every page of this book, that you would think you are watching a movie in a movie theater. Doug has done an excellent job on character development as well. I came to love all his characters except for the evil ones. Cyle, Lena, Bixby and Gafney especially have grown close to my heart. I could identify with each of them at different stages of their uniquely unfolding, breathtaking, exciting and painful paths of life.
It amazes me how masterfully Doug makes his readers see how each of the characters are interrelated and play a major role in the overall victory. We are all connected and uniquely gifted in the battle against the powers of spiritual darkness.
Defenders of the Breach points to a greater spiritual reality that goes far beyond the story itself, as I feel this to be the heartbeat of the author.
One of the most impacting episodes for me was when Cyle goes to the Valley of Lost Souls. As they were peering into the water in front of them, and seeing their reflection of what they could have become if they followed their God given path of destiny, they felt the agonizing pain of intense remorse.
I believe that we will see this amazing story unfolding on the big screen some day, maybe earlier than we might think. Awesome job Doug, I can't wait for the sequel to come out!
Fictional Yet True May 30, 2008
This book is an engaging, fictional fantasy; but the story contains so much truth--the reality of the spiritual battle, the importance of prayer, and fulfilling one's purpose. The way the author depicts the characters and the kingdom/world they live in is amazing. The characters come alive. I could relate to the various struggles of Cycle and Gafney especially: shame, fear, and trust. The lost souls in the cave who did not fulfill their calling and become the powerful warriors they were meant to be, had a huge impact on me. I give this book an A+++. This would make a terrific movie!
Defenders of the Breach May 29, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed Defenders of the Breach. It takes off in the beginning and never slows down. I like a book that has action and adventure as well as good character development. The Characters in Defenders were easy to identify with as we are allowed to see into their world and their struggles that are so real to life. The spiritual warfare message is invigorating yet the theme of personal destiny is not overshadowed by the other. In addition to the messages of the book it is just a great read. Many of my friends are reading the book and they love it. I strongly recommend it and you don't have to be a sci fi fantasy fan to enjoy it.
An Epic worth reading May 14, 2008
The storyline in "Defenders of the Breach" caught my attention from the start. Once I started reading it, I found it difficult to put down. Although the characters in the story are fictional, they paint a picture of a reality that is truer than life. As a follower of Christ, the book gave me a greater awareness of the unseen world around me, as well as a renewed sense of the value of prayer. The only problem I had with the book was that I found myself hungry for more; wanting to know what happens next in the lives of the characters I had become so fond of. Hopefully the author will consider a sequel.
