Item description for The Human Person in God's World: Studies to Commemorate the Austin Farrer Centenary by Douglas Hedley & Brian L. Hebblethwaite...

Overview
Austin Farrer's important contribution to philosophical and theological anthropology is discussed here by the six main contributors to the Austin Farrer Centenary Conference held at Oriel College in 2004. After an Introductory survey by Basil Mitchell, Nancy Murphy provides an in-depth study of Farrer's defence of the freedom of the will, Edward Henderson brings out the key notion of double agency in Farrer's conception of the way God acts in and through the human person. Brian Hebblethwaite explores Farrer's writings for the light they throw on creation and evolution, with special reference to the problems of providence and evil. David Brown extends Farrer's insights on the role of images in biblical revelation to their role in natural religion, and Douglas Hedley shows how Farrer's - and Mitchell's - work on the imagination enriches our understanding of the relation between faith and reason. The Centenary Conference sermon by the Bishop of Oxford is also appended.

Reviews - What do customers think about Human Person in God's World?

An excellent introduction to and overview of Farrer's philosophical theology  Feb 14, 2007
An all-star collection of philosophers and theologians provides lucid, well-informed, and thought-provoking commentary on Farrer's philosophical theology. This book begins with a wonderful introduction by the eminent Christian philosopher Basil Mitchell, and it concludes with a fine sermon by the former bishop of Oxford, Richard Harries.

In between are chapters by Nancey Murphy, Edward Henderson, Brian Hebblethwaite, David Brown, and Douglas Hedley.

The essays examine, analyze, and take off from Farrer's thought. There is good complementarity among the various contributions. The essay by David Brown on the role of images in theological reflection is especially insightful. Each author carefully examines the work of a man, Austin Farrer, who believed that faith and reason can work together.

But I should note that you do not need to be well acquainted with Farrer's work to appreciate this book. The essays can be understood on their own by any intelligent layperson.

This is solid, exciting material for today's thoughtful Christian. And the small paperback volume is handsomely produced. The editing and typography are excellent.
