Item description for Jesus of Nazareth by Dorothee Soelle & Luise Schottroff...

Overview
In this popular yet academically grounded look at Jesus, liberation theologians Dorothee Soelle and Luise Schottroff offer a corrective to the "Jesus of history" research recently made popular through the works of the Jesus Seminar. By situating Jesus within this community of friends--who played a large part in his life, ministry, and movement--the authors show that the story of Jesus has not come to a close. Rather, this book demonstrates how his works, words, and inspired community pose timeless challenges for contemporary life. Includes sixty-seven color illustrations, a glossary, chronological table, map, and brief annotated bibliography.

Reviews - What do customers think about Jesus of Nazareth?

What were they thinking?  Feb 8, 2006
Soelle and Schottroff say in their introduction that a biography of Jesus cannot be written. Then procede to paint a picture of historical information and dogma based on feminism at its most unbending and theology at its most critical.

Looking at the life of Jesus thru the eyes of such liberalism is disconcerting. I kept getting the feeling that faith was a bad word. That the life of Jesus means this but...another in the life of 1st century Palestine. What was then cannot be now because it just didn't happen that way.

I would not recommend this book.

The Meaning of Christ  Dec 24, 2004
I'd give this book six stars if I could! It's very accessible, and yet it is so much more than just a simple retelling of the gospels. Soelle and Schottroff tell the story of Jesus in a way that shows what he means to the life of the world. They provide cultural background and context to show how Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God would have been good news to the poor and oppressed in first century Palestine.

Conservative Christians might be put off by the down-to-earth focus, but if you don't get hung up on that this book is sure to inspire you and give you a fresh appreciation of the Gospel.
