Item description for Reflections on a Dying Life by Donald X. Burt...

Overview
Reflections on a Dying Life is a series of reflections based on two common themes in Saint Augustine's Spirituality. Donald Burt O.S.A., explores Augustine's recurrent idea that as human beings we are living in an Inn for Travelers-a hospice for those who are still on the road-as well as the idea that every moment of our existence is a movement towards death, the moment when we must "exit" this hospice to the life waiting for us beyond the doors. These ideas are developed in three sections; Part One: "Life in the Inn for Travelers," Part Two: "Death: the Door to Life," and Part Three: "Life After Death." In hopes that his reflections on these ideas will assist himself and his readers to be happy, Fr. Burt focuses on the support the Christian faith provides for those in transit. The Christian faith assures us that whatever happens to us in this life, we will never be without the presence of a loving God who guaranteed through God's own death that we can have perfect happiness on the other side of the door of death, and who in the meantime has promised that God will stay with us, supporting us along the way. A remarkable collection of essays that provides thoughtful rumination on our life now, our future death, and the life that awaits us thereafter, Reflections on a Dying Life is an excellent navigational tool for any thoughtful guest in this mostly pleasant Inn for Travelers.

Reviews - What do customers think about Reflections on a Dying Life?

An evocative, well written book  May 12, 2007
This is a charming, well written book on a basic question: What is the meaning of life?

Father Burt answers this question in the context of his own life, drawing more general lessons from that particular example.

Father Burt has not written one of those books that simply insists "Success in life is meaningless; think only of Heaven." Instead, he makes a different point in a different way.

He uses an image of the world as an inn, or even a hospice, to make his point: Even though we are here only temporarily, we are meant to enjoy aspects of the world around us. It is not surprising that we are in no hurry to leave. Indeed, there is much beauty and love in the world around us. And he -- and we -- are not so bad after all.

Father Burt illustrates his points with evocative chapters, one memorable chapter being "One Paw Short of Perfection." He gained insight into his own life watching a dog named Buck who had three legs but who had a great time walking through campus with his human masters. He was quite unconcerned about his imperfection. And we should not be too concerned about our imperfections either.

In his examination of the meaning of life, Father Burt takes a Christian point of view for granted, but he does not assume anything particularly Catholic.

After reading this book, you may feel the way that I do. I wish that I knew Father Burt. He is a very thoughtful philospher and priest. After reading this book, you'll know him a little.
