St. John's Bible-Praying the Word Oct 30, 2009
I first saw this book at St. Thomas Moore Chapel in New Haven, Connecticut. As I turned the pages, I was blown away by the Bible verses done in beautiful calligraphy on vibrant backgrounds--a treat to the eyes with readings to start the day. The book comes in a hard-covered protective sleeve. An amazing value for the price.

This is a beautiful book that is well suited as a gift or for personal use. It is nicely cloth bound and has it's own cloth slipcover box to protect the volume. The illustrations remind me of illuminated manuscripts from the past. It is also reasonably priced. I highly recommend this book.
A Glorious Prayer Book Dec 26, 2008
This book is one of the most beautiful gifts you could give to a person who prays, or to a person who would like to begin to pray. It is a prayer book, containing modern illuminated manuscripts from the only illuminated BIble made since the invention of the printing press, the St. John's Bible. Reproductions of portions of the full St. John's Bible are available - the Psalms, the Pentateuch, the Prophets, the Gospels and Acts, the Wisdom Literature (no epistles yet). They are treasures. This beautiful prayer book, composed of short scripture portions, together with well-crafted introductory pieces, is a stunning compliment to the full Biblical texts that are already published.
The selection of the 33 texts chosen is a little surprising, and it works. Many are the most famous and powerful scriptures - The Shema, five psalms, the Lord's Prayer, the Sermon on the Mount. Anyone with a cursory understanding of scripture will remember and resonate with these texts. Catholics and those of us who have spent much time in retreats at monasteries will love the inclusion of Mary's Magnificat and the Canticle of Zechariah. Many women, feminists and scholars will love the heavy inclusion of Wisdom literature and the translations thereof (New Revised Standard Version of the Bible). Evangelicals will probably deeply appreciate the strong emphasis on the power and majesty of God, and the thread of salvation history that strings through the texts. One of the surprises of text choices is that the Shema "Hear O Israel..." appears in four different permutations - from Deuteronomy, Matthew, Mark & Luke. This and the prophetic texts, the Aaronic blessing, underscore the critical continuity of Christ as fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy. And Christians drawn to the emerging church will love the ancient-modern feel to the texts and the art!
The introduction to the prayer book describes its purpose: "It is designed to be prayed slowly and meditatively in the manner of the Benedictine practice of lectio divina. Lectio divina, a Latin term meaning 'sacred reading,' necessitates a quiet and peaceful time and place for one to read and reread a small section of Scripture. Furthermore, this book is designed to promote vision divina, or 'sacred viewing.' If we are meant to reread a passage meditatively, we are also called to view and review an image. The two practices work in tandem to bring one into the presence of God."
A dear friend sent me Praying the Word for Christmas, yesterday. I awoke this morning and have been praying with these beautiful texts. The interplay of words, scripture, and powerful art is staggering. I am profoundly grateful to the Benedictine brothers and the illuminators, who have helped bring this book into being. Their work glorifies God and bears the promise of illumination to us.
