Item description for Laws of the Spiritual Order: Innovation and Reconstruction in the Soteriology of Thomas Erskine of Linlathen (Studies in Evangelical History and Thought) by Don Horrocks & Trevor A. Hart...

Overview
Don Horrocks argues that Thomas Erskine's unique historical and theological significance as a soteriological innovator has been neglected. This timely reassessment reveals Erskine as a creative, radical theologian of central and enduring importance in Scottish nineteenthcentury theology, perhaps equivalent in significance to that of S.T. Coleridge in England.

Reviews - What do customers think about Laws of the Spiritual Order: Innovation and Reconstruction in the Soteriology of Thomas Erskine of Linlathen (Studies in Evangelical History and Thought)?

Excellent Overview  Mar 23, 2007
Thomas Erskine of Linlathen was a lawyer who wrote theology. He thought deeply and restructured the Calvinism of his day in unique ways. Little known or appreciated today, Erskine was one of Scotland's great theologians of the 19th century. Horrock's work here in this revised for publication doctoral dissertation is to be commended for its evenhanded and sensitive reading of the revisionary Calvinist and constructive evangelical theologian Thomas Erskine of Linlathen. This is the best book to purchase if you want to know Erskine's thought. Horrock's reading of Erskine consistently provides just the right clue to understanding Erskine's corpus of published works. Erskine is not easy to read. Horrocks sets Erskine's work in context and interprets Erskine's theology with great acument and skill. A fine book on a little known Scottish theologian of the early 19th century. We are in Horrock's debt.
