Item description for The Other Side of Darkness (Recorded Live at the Four Winds Survival Project) by Derrick Jensen...
Speaking in an almost improvisational style, Jensen explores the nature of injustice, of what civilizations do to the natural world, and how, in the face of the resulting horror that is one of the all too apparent consequences of grave injustice, civilized human beings create intricate systems of denial, silence, abnegation, deception, and self-hatred to keep it at bay. A typical Jensen event is multidimensional and feels a bit like traveling beneath the earth among tree roots as they twist their way into soil, rock, riverbeds and accompany fish, insects, discarded tires, cellophane wrappers, animals, history, and human instinct on a strange and interlocking journey. It is indeed a heart rending, mind expanding, and ultimately healing excercise to explore Jensen's root system, with him not so much as a guide, but an experienced fellow traveler.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Other Side of Darkness (Recorded Live at the Four Winds Survival Project)?
Courageous truths Jun 22, 2007
These three CDs were recorded at talks based on Derrick Jensen's amazing books "A Language Older than Words" and "The Culture of Make-Believe." With wonderful humor, sharp wit and an engaging conversational style, he draws connections between a wide range of seemingly unrelated topics, weaving them into a brilliant insights about why civilization is killing the planet. It's so refreshing to hear him cut through the lies of this relentlessly destructive culture. "The Other Side of Darkness" will open your heart to painful truths, make you laugh, and inspire you to action, all at once.
not this Jun 5, 2007
Very disappointing. This tedious, long presentation is chock full of endless digressions and broken sentences as Jensen tries to be witty. The effect is more narcissistic than anything else. Few ideas conveyed amist all the pointless jumps, and nothing that has not been covered in his books.
He is a far better writer than a speaker. Read his stuff: essential!
A passionate critique of technology, capitalism and industrial patriarchy! Oct 20, 2006
Without a doubt, Derrick Jensen is one of the most important social critics in North America today. Whether he's discussing deforestation, the death of salmon or violence against women, his words will move you. In "The Other Side of Darkness", Jensen guides us on a painful journey past the toxic landfills of our culture to a place of healing and restoration. For anyone willing to look deeply at their own reflection in the dirty rivers of our society, this 3 cd collection is a powerful, transformative experience. I especially recommend buying this collection to share with friends who may not have the time or inclination to read some of Jensen's many incredible books. Listening to Jensen's words in harmony with the voices of trees and mountains and birds may well awaken the listener out of complicity and denial to an awareness of our responsiblity to protect the earth.
Everyone should read or listen Jul 21, 2006
Everyone in America should read or listen to Derrick Jensen. A voice of sanity, an imperfect man, a sense of humor, and so much to say. My daughter told me about him and I have passed on his books and ideas to all my friends. There can't be enough people aware of his works. By the way, I reserve a 5 star for absolute perfection, if it exists.
Voice of Jensen Mar 12, 2004
Before I review this CD set, allow me to talk a bit about the author. Derrick Jensen is the critically acclaimed author of a number of books: including Strangely Like War; Walking on Water; The Culture of Make Believe; A Language Older than Words; Listening to the Land: Conversations about Nature, Culture, and Eros; and co-author of Railroads and Clearcuts. Among environmentalists and social critics, there are none more vocal and unabashedly critical of global industrial society and its impact upon the biosphere AND our own psyches. If you are not already familiar with his work, I suggest you get started today; for there is perhaps no one with a more articulate, informed and passionate perspective on Life. I recommend starting with A Language Older Than Words.
This CD compelation is perfect for those have not yet had the pleasure of hearing Jensen speak in person. Quite different than his printed voice, Jensen's talks are a disturbing mixture of revelation and sardonic humor -- a twisted kind of humor that makes you want to laugh and cry all at once. The 3rd CD contains some of the most stirring, powerful speech I have ever heard.
Altogether, the perfect way to ingest some Jensen.
