Item description for The Praying Life: Seeking God in All Things by Deborah Smith Douglas...
Nothing is more remarkable or more beautiful than an ordinary life, quietly transformed by prayer. This is the life that Deborah Smith Douglas chronicles and invites readers into in her lovely collection of essays and poems. Drawing from events as simple as breakfast with her five-year-old daughter or waiting in line at the post office, Douglas shows how a loving relationship with God can be nurtured in small ways every day. Without my ever really intending it, she writes, my own life as a wife and mother, daughter and friend has taught me to see God hidden in the ordinary, to watch for God under the surface of things as a fisherman watches for fish.
Woven into each of these pieces, along with reflections on the author s experiences, are guidelines for readers watching for God in their own unique and ordinary lives. Divided into four sections Ways of Praying, Healing, Spiritual Companionship, and Fruitfulness The Praying Life will help Christians move from awareness of God s presence in their lives to a deep participation in God s love. In love with The Praying Life Nov 7, 2003
Through vivid metaphors, Deborah Smith Douglas shows us the mystical hidden within the mundane and makes God powerfully real in our everyday lives. Her carefully constructed essays and poems, each based on a tangible theme, are a pleasure to read and even more enjoyable to ponder as I go about my daily activities. Douglas' writing is imaginative and literate, and manages to be both down to earth and intellectually stimulating. Her persuasive arguments are reinforced and made timeless with references from literary soul mates of the recent and ancient past. I will want to read this book again and again and share it with friends and spiritual soul mates of my own. The Praying Life: Seeking God in All Things is a treasure.
living prayer Oct 8, 2003
Deborah Douglas' collection of essays and poems offers a rich variety of perspectives on living a life of prayer--a life that is marked by deepening awareness of God's presence and increasing capacity to respond in love. With wit, good humor, insight and intelligence, the author makes the life of prayer real and engaging. I laughed out loud several times, and I wrote many of her lines in my journal. This is a book to savor, to learn from, to delight in, to treasure.
Douglas' ability to express the mystery of prayer as well as its mundane aspects, and to do so in lucidly beautiful prose, makes this book well worth having. The essays also lend themselves both to adult education and to classes in spirituality.
