Item description for Slapped Awake by Deborah Lang Hampton...
When a diagnosis of breast cancer upended her life in her early 40's, Deborah Hampton found herself confronted not only with medical and treatment issues, but larger issues about what it means to be a woman, to be fully alive, and to make sense of suffering and adversity. The persistence of her breast cancer over a decade has forced her to forge a relationship with her disease and to create a life that includes the presence of cancer as a partner. Her honesty, courage, and humor in this journey provide one woman's map into enemy territory and a guide to befriending an adversary.

Reviews - What do customers think about Slapped Awake?
A beautifully-written and inspiring book about life Jul 9, 2007
I tend to avoid books that I think may be "depressing." However, once I started reading this book, it seemed everything but that. Deborah's story is so riveting, it's hard to put "Slapped Awake" down. I was immediately drawn into her story, laughing at her sassy, irreverent humor, and deeply touched by her insights as she describes the realities of breast cancer. Even though she unsparingly details the journey of someone dealing with a terrible illness, the book never becomes maudlin or tragic. Instead, I felt uplifted by her spirited story--and by what it means to live deeply and richly even under the most challenging of circumstances. My husband read and loved this book, too. This is the kind of book you'll want to share with everyone you know.
A Little Laughter and A Few Tears Jun 7, 2007
I very much enjoyed reading Debbi's book. She has shared her journey through her recurrence of breast cancer and how she has lived her life to the fullest and not allowed this disease to control her life. I think this is a must read for anyone who has had breast cancer. She makes the thought of recurrence not so scary.

5 stars just aren't enough.... Mar 24, 2007
I have been savoring Debbi's writing, even her personal health and family updates, for six years now. Her words never fail to resonate with me and soothe my soul. Slapped Awake is no exception, capturing every nuance of breast cancer in ways that are so brilliantly moving, I think it should be required reading.
