Reviews - What do customers think about God's Design for Heaven and Earth: Our Planet Earth (God's Design Series)?
Similar to Jeannie Fulbright's Young Explorers Series, but not as colorful Jul 31, 2007
We are about half way through Our Planet Earth right now (with a 3rd/4th grader). We are really enjoying it.
God's Design is similar to Jeannie Fulbright's Young Explorers/Apologia series, which we have also used. So I will compare a bit, for those who have used Fulbright's books.
The God's Design series also has a strong Biblical worldview and is also multilevel. However, it lacks the color of the Young Explorers series and the text is written to a slightly older audience. (The back of the book says is for Grades 1 through 8.)
The God's Design series also uses household materials for the experiments. The supply list is at the beginning of the lesson, so it's easy quickly see what you need.
Each lesson has several paragraphs that introduce the topic, then the student does a hands-on activity/experiment. Then there are review questions and a section of "Take it further" questions that require the student to apply what they've learned already in order to answer a question that wasn't directly addressed prior.
My biggest problem with this book is that the answers immediately follow the questions in the review section and the "Take it Further" section. If I read the text, this is not a problem, I can ask the question and my daughter can just narrate the answer. But sometimes my daughter will read the text on her own. I would have loved to have been able to ask her to write her own answers to the questions.
All told, I am very pleased with it and we are enjoying it. I had hoped Jeannie Fulbright would create a Geology unit this year, but when I emailed her, she had no plans for one yet. So I ordered Our Planet Earth. I would recommend it to friends with children in grades 4 to 8 (I think the topics are a bit much for a 1st-2nd grader, but they could "come along for the ride" with older siblings.)
