Item description for Telling On Texas by S Gullion David...
Telling on Texas is the story of two brothers and their attempts to survive in and make sense of Texas and the country of their birth. When their family returns to the Philippines after a year, they are left to fend for themselves in a small, north central, Texas town. It is about coming of age in a world fraught with change and hidden dangers. David's historical novel is at times funny, ribald, sad, serious and satirical. They could not be more different in attitude and style. Danny is older, outgoing, confident, lacking neither the charm or code of ethics which might bar him from experiencing what life has to offer. The novel explores how the people in this time and place related to and dealt with what they saw as being important factors in their lives. Though no less determined than his older brother to succeed, Robert is also concerned with trying to do the right thing. "Doing the right thing" is explored through the moral filters of the denizens of the north country. In the end they come to see the good in each other and tolerate, if not necessarily respect, each other's perspective. It is not about saints and sinners. Few are those who fit either mold perfectly. It is a tale about Texas, about American, about being human.
