Item description for Doing Right And Being Good: Catholic And Protestant Readings In Christian Ethics (Michael Glazier Books) by Peter R. Gathje & David Oki Ahearn...

Overview
Continuing the unbroken conversation on ethics that has endured across the Christian generations, David Oki Ahearn and Peter R. Gathje present Doing Right and Being Good. For Ahearn and Gathje, ethics is the critical reflection on morality, focusing on our beliefs, our practices, our held values. In addition to the book's wide-reaching selected readings, Ahearn and Gathje offer introductions to each chapter which provide extensive overviews and establish contexts for moral issues over which sincere Christians differ. The authors examine two broad understandings of ethics: that of doing right (understanding the difference between right and wrong) and being good (specific personal traits). Acknowledging a shared history between Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions, this book takes both historical and ecumenical approaches to ethics. Engaging, and informational, Doing Right and Being Good aims at providing constructive reflection and dialogue to all readers, regardless of background.

Reviews - What do customers think about Doing Right And Being Good: Catholic And Protestant Readings In Christian Ethics (Michael Glazier Books)?

The selected essays cover such topics as Christian pacifism, feminism, and liberation theology  Nov 14, 2005
Doing Right and Being Good: Catholic and Protestant Readings in Christian Ethics is a reader that represents both the Roman Catholic and Protestant moral traditions. The selected essays cover such topics as Christian pacifism, feminism, and liberation theology, as well as classical readings by major figures in the history of Christian moral thought and mainstream movements. Sample readings include "Appropriate Vulnerability: A Sexual Ethic for Singles?", "The Biblical Meaning of Poverty", "How Do Love and Justice Work Together?" and much more. An index to scripture references and an index of authors and subjects round out this erudite, philosophically deep compendium. Highly recommended especially for religious studies students focusing on Christian Ethics.

Clear Dialogue on Christian Ethics   Jun 6, 2005
Catholic and Protestant views on ethics cannot be considered light reading, but the editors of this work have employed design and language that bring the issues into clear focus. Ahearn and Gathje define "ethics" as critical reflection on morality, which they describe as the construction of values, beliefs, and practices that order our life in society. They explain being good and doing right as two ways to think about ethics: being good relates to character traits, while doing right involves specific acts and duties.

The book is divided into two sections, the first dealing with ethical methods and the second exploring such currently contentious issues as marriage, family and sexuality; war and violence; and stewardship of the economy and environment. Each chapter begins with several pages of background on the issue including an overview on the readings that follow. The readings represent a variety of sources. For example, material in the stewardship chapter is taken from scripture and the writings of Thomas Aquinas; John Wesley; the U.S. Catholic bishops; Gustavo Gutierrez, a founder of liberation theology; and Rosemary Radford Ruether, a leading feminist theologian.
