Item description for Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan...
In this school, the gay kids and the straight kids all get along just fine, the quarterbackis a cross-dresser, and the cheerleaders ride Harleys-- yetthe road to true love is still a strange and winding path, as Paul discovers when he meets the boy of his dreams.
Outline Review In this delightful young adult novel for readers 12 and up, high school sophomore Paul says, "There isn't really a gay scene or a straight scene in our town. They got all mixed up a while back, which I think is for the best." And, as he observes at the end of the story, "It's a wonderful world." Paul has both gay and straight friends, and they all hang out together at terrific bookstores and concerts, and advise one another on the sometimes troubled progress of their various romances. Paul is smitten with Noah, and they are beginning a serious relationship when Kyle, Paul's ex, complicates things by deciding that all is forgiven. Joni is going out with Chuck, who dominates her, much to her friends' disapproval. Tony's conservative parents refuse to acknowledge that he is gay, so the others must bone up on Bible verses all week so they can pretend Saturday night is a study group. And then there's Infinite Darlene, football quarterback and Homecoming Queen, who deserves a whole romance novel of her own. Life in their town is gloriously accepting of differences and only occasionally verges on magic realism, in this first novel in which same sex preference is not the problem. --Patty Campbell

This story on young gay love is charming, refreshing and irresistible! Apr 29, 2008
I have a fun time reading this one. My only regrets is that I did not pick it up sooner. The prose is lovely, the narration refreshing and delightful as we get to experience Paul's charming young gay life through his eyes. Paul's life is every young gay boy's dream, acceptance by family, friends and teachers. He knows who he is and is more or less certain of life. He is surrounded by a cast of interesting friends. Tony, his best gay friend who does not have it easy with his religious parents. Joni, his best female friend who now values her boy friend more than her best friend. Kyle, his ex-boy friend who wants Paul back. The quirky and humorous Infinite Darlene, a drag queen but also the star quarterback hunk. Last but not least is Noah, the Boy whom Paul loves at first sight and will do everything to hold on to. A very charming, heartwarming and hate free atmoshpere, where gay boys and girls could love freely, this one is a gem of a story.
A gay kid's Narnia... Apr 20, 2008
I got this audio book on a whim after reading the descriptions. For one, yes, some of the actors, especially the narrator, verge on annoying. I suppose it's the unrealistic optimism and hope that exudes from every word. However, looking past the almost child-like whining, you get a sense of what life is like if you were born "normal" by today's standards. Growing up gay can be one of the hardest things for any youth, especially as it seems harder and harder to suppress yourself. High school can be a cold, unforgiving place for those that fit in, and shockingly bad for those with a secret to hide.
I think this book offers a glimmer of hope, if not a way to escape into the fantasy of living your life without judgement or persecution. If you're an open, caring parent, buy this for your son or daughter, gay or straight. Let them know that their actions can help make someone's life easier, just by accepting who they are.

A great story for young adult readers Feb 2, 2008
David Levithan creates a great story with Boy Meets Boy. It is a well-written book that keeps you reading from page to page. There is no graphic sexual content, no extreme language, no violence or drug use so it is appropriate for readers of all different ages. The characters seem very real and the storyline itself is creative and well thought-out. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a quick read and would certainly add it to my personal library.
If Only Life Was Really Like This... Jan 17, 2008
My literature professor recommended this book, and I actually really enjoyed it. The fact that the teens are openly gay and the rest of the high school kids couldn't care less is fascinating. I love it! I wish it were really like that. I would have loved to go to a high school like that...where homosexuals are not treated any differently and where the quarterback of the football team could also be the head cheerleader. I think everyone should read this book because this is the way our world should be...
