Item description for The Message of Genesis 1-11: The Dawn of Creation (Bible Speaks Today) by David J. Atkinson...
Overview The message of Genesis by David Atkinson is an Evangelical exposition of the first 11 chapters of Genesis. This is the first of two volumes covering Genesis in The Bible Speaks Today series. Atkinson jumps right into his comments on the scripture without any introductory statements. His comments are based on his scholastic work at Oxford University but are written for teachers or lay people. This is a good informative and devotional work. David Atkinson is fellow and chaplain of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and author of a number of books.
Publishers Description Genesis shows us how and why we are. It uncovers the origins of evil. It illuminates the meaning of freedom. It expresses the harmony of creation. And it offers hope for the renewal of our natural world and for the healing of our broken relationships. "Genesis 1-11 is really an overture to the rest of the Bible." So writes David Atkinson in his introduction to this thoughtful and spiritual guide to the opening chapters of Genesis. Writing as a scientist and as a pastor, Atkinson avoides technicalities and speculation and provides a skillful guide to the text's theological significance. While many commentaries on these chapters become tangled in problems of dating, authorship and historicity, this tour of the opening chapters of Genesis focuses on the issues that really matter. Atkinson's work will be a delight to all--seasoned expositors and novice readers alike.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Message of Genesis 1-11: The Dawn of Creation (Bible Speaks Today)?
Very Helpful For Pastors & Bible Study Leaders Oct 11, 2008
Using very helpful titles and phrases, Atkinson sets the pace for this series of commentaries. I've grown to look to this series of commentaries for phrases that help communicate the truths of scripture in a catchy and memorable way. For example, he uses the term Majesty and Misery to describe the Creation event and the Fall. Sometimes an overview of a section is so well written that you can read his overview from the pulpit or to a small group or classroom.
As far as technical depth, this series is not designed to present technical depth, so I don't fault it for skipping over a lot of material.
Here's how I use this commentary: After researching the text and looking at deeper more technical works (like Hamilton, Wenham or Waltke) I sometimes use this commentary for developing the way I will communicate the crucial points I want to make.
If you are not oriented to more technical commentaries, this one will assist you. I'm glad it's in my library and am using it in my own Genesis series. I recommend it to you also.
