What a fun book! I got this after reading his Commentary on Job, where he does Feminist, Materialist, and Vegetarian readings of the book of Job.
After some interesting reflection on "texts" with very interesting ideas (that texts include within themselves the seeds of their own destruction; that texts arise in response to conflict), he turns to his main subject of study: what the Biblical texts mean to people in the modern world. He describes various surveys carried out to measure biblical knowlege among various populations. He ends with a sharp critique of the lack of knowledge of modern biblical scholarship in the church today.
He analyzes real data from surveys carried out by students in his class. Though the surveyed population is highly localized to Sheffield, England, the results are nonetheless interesting, and from the description of method, questions, etc., you can picture yourself as a student in his class, working on such a project.
This book is short, interesting, wonderfully written, and plain fun. I highly recommend it.
