Item description for Founding the Future: A History of Truman State University by David C. Nichols...
In 1867, Joseph Baldwin founded the Northeast Missouri Normal School to train young men and women of the area to teach in the new public schools being established throughout the state. Baldwin believed that teachers must not only be highly trained in their particular field, but must also have a solid general education. Over the next decades, the school continued to focus on training teachers for the public schools, but with an additional emphasis on general education, gradually expanded into other fields of study and professional training.
The college continued to emphasize a solid education as the basis of specialized training in a particular field of study leading to the institution of an assessment program, which resulted in an overall raising of standards. Balancing between tradition and innovation, Northeast Missouri built a strong foundation on providing a superior liberal arts and sciences education in a student-center learning environment. In 1987, Northeast Missouri State University was given a new mission as Missouri's premier public liberal arts and sciences institution. This change in mission was reinforced a decade later when the name was changed to Truman State University.
In Founding the Future, David Nichols traces the university's path as it evolved from a small, regional teachers' college to a nationally recognized, highly selective liberal arts and sciences institution. Insights from faculty, administrators, and students provide snapshots of important moments in the university's history.
