Item description for Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic by David Currie...
Overview David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism - theology professors, seminary presidents and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie himself received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became a Roman Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholic and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.

Reviews - What do customers think about Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic?
interesting and informative May 19, 2008
I am Catholic and love my faith. Many people have been trying to "save my soul" by getting me to leave my faith. Wanting to arm myself against their attacks and criticism, I bought this book. It explains why Catholics believe what we believe and do what we do. It doesn't criticize evangelicals or fundamentalists, but it explains what they believe about Catholics. It is interesting, quick to read, and gave me even greater commitment to my faith as well as the ability to defend it. My sincere thanks to the author.
An Openly Biased View Of Catholicism May 7, 2008
David Currie provides a concise explanation of the Catholic Church's position on numerous subjects that are not generally addressed or understood by Protestants, including the belief that the bread and wine actually become in substance (although not appearance) the body and blood of Jesus during communion, the requirements of both faith and works for admission to heaven, the role of purgatory, the importance of Mary, and various moral issues. Currie completely agrees with all the Church's moral issue positions including its opposition to artificial birth control, the use of which "makes the marriage act a lie." In his Epilogue, he reports with great pride that his wife is expecting their seventh child in God's answer to the prayers of their three-year-old daughter. Currie also reviews the Catholic Church's position that its authority is derived from Jesus to Peter to the succession of popes and that this chain of authority gives the Church the power to set dogma which is to be accepted without question by good Catholics. According to Currie, if a good Catholic disagrees with the Church, he or she should try harder to understand why the Church is right. Currie's personal background as a fundamentalist who converted to Catholicism is always on display and his numerous anecdotes are all openly biased in favor of Catholicism. He begins the book with a statement that fundamentalists believe all Catholics go to Hell. His one priest/sex abuse story just happens to end in the alleged victim recanting his allegation. And he mentions that certain Protestant churches do not accept Catholic baptism whereas Catholic churches accept Protestant baptism, but chooses not to mention that most Protestant churches offer communion to Catholics but Catholic churches do not offer communion to non-Catholics.
Do you love and follow God or your church? Mar 21, 2008
If you're Protestant and want to stay that way DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!
If you love God more than anything else and HE is the center of your life then read this book and open your mind to the truth within it. You will soon be Catholic. Let me be the first to welcome you HOME!
My Baptist preacher told my wife to divorce me when I decide to follow the Christ and His true Church. Be forwarned, you may be pursecuted by those whom you thought were friends.
PS. My wife did not divorce me though it was a trying time. Years later she has chosen to come home to Rome too! PRAISE GOD!
WOW!!! An amazing book Jan 12, 2008
I have to say, I was brought up Catholic from the very beginning, have gone through Catholic Catecism, and have always enjoyed and believed in my faith, but this book really brings a serious insight to the differences between Evangelicalism and Catholicism. A view I would have never know if I hadn't read this book. I feel so very inspired as a young person, about being Catholic. It is such a feeling of the Holy Spirit just burning inside of you. David Currie brings out the essence of truth within the Catholic doctrines and teachings, and makes very accurate points about vast range of subjects, including Mary, Salvation, Moral Issues, Church Authority. Things I can never remember ever reviewing in Catecism brough out into the light. This book has been truly inspiring! I can only imagine how tough it must have been for him to convert from Evangelicalism to Catholicism. If you are Evangelical and looking to understand a very good overview of the Catholic Church, and to clear up misunderstandings, definitely read this book!
I buy this book over and over and over Dec 17, 2007
I believe I have purchased this book 25 times at least. I have it sent to friends and family who are struggling with or have left the Catholic church, and I credit this book alone with keeping anyone who has read it in the church. My Catholic friends call it The Book (with deference to the Holy Bible), as in, "You should send them The Book," because of its powers of persuasion in explaining the faith. So it's my form of evangelicalism to order this book several times over and get it in the hands of many. I try to always have one on my shelf to just hand to someone, but today I find I am out, so I am ordering more!
