From Certain Mercies: The Great Blue
Watching the great blue heron stepping carefully, its leg held suspended for minutes if need be so as to not frighten the frogs Its insatiable appetite requires it to consume; seeing the white flag at the hind end of a deer bounding tauntingly away at one's Clumsy approach; listening to sooty chimney swift nestlings through the reverberations of this fire-fed abyss of brick and mortar We seek these equilibratory mercies among the tenuous grace and beauty of this place we are only oddly intrusive visitors of. Death, life; suffering, celebration. The scale hangs suspended in its ageless balance held over our heads by Harmonia and Mars. The great blue rises to the glittering ceiling in the slate-gray evening where at dawn it was shrouded in the mist upon the pond. It will head south. Only to a bird is direction not hidden. The north-running roads are no check on where the east-running might err. The voice of the bird echoing in marshland that is our voice seeking balance with lives of obscurity, trying to pierce the vague haze. It is a challenge. It is an apology. It is a call down through the long chasm of the wind this fleeting blue plume of incorporeal breath.
