More About Daphne M. Gulland, David G. Hinds-Howell & David Hinds-Howell
MY PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am a writer and a poet. I was educated at Virgo Fidelis Grammar School in London and then went on to study English and German at Bedford College, University of London. My parents were the directors of a language school in London, and so I was able to meet children and students from all over the world and observe how they learnt English. I was able to discover their various linguistic problems and explore ways of helping them.
It gradually became my life’s purpose to write books that would make it enjoyable and interesting for children and adults to learn English. I like doing things differently and so all my books and my www.saltcross.com website may take you by surprise!
My first book was The Penguin Dictionary of English Idioms. This was published in 1986 and is still selling very well all over the world. I have divided the idioms into 34 categories, for example: Colours, Weather, Trees and Plants, Body, Furniture, Food, Money, Games and Sports, etc. Chapter 9 – Fish has the following headings: Fish, Mackerel, Herring, Eel, Sardines, Fry, Caviare, Oyster, Whelk, Clam, Limpet, Crab and Shark.
I wrote this dictionary together with my father and we both had a wonderful time working on it together. One can read this dictionary either chapter by chapter or use it to look up the meanings of various idioms. There is an index at the back of the book with more than 4,000 idioms. I think it is great fun to read this dictionary and one is always surprised to find so many idioms under one heading.
My next book was a dictionary of English and German similes for the German publisher, Langenscheidt, published in 1996. It has been translated into Polish and Czech.
I have recently written two books for children in easy English:
Wallpaper Whizzie and Tinki and the Cloud Fairies, both in 2014.
I wrote Wallpaper Whizzie on two levels – one for children and one for parents who are reading the book to their children. It is full of hidden meanings and you can find them explained to you on my www.saltcross.com website under: About Daphne/ Daphne’s Publications.
I enjoy writing poetry and you may find a small selection of my poems on my www.saltcross.com website under About Daphne Gulland / Poems.
You may also find a section here on Poetry with a collection of my favourite Inspirational Poems, English Poems and Poems by my ancestors, Agnes Rous Howell and James Howell.
I wish you much pleasure in reading my books and poems.
