Reviews - What do customers think about First Start French, Student Edition?
A highly recommended addition to private and public school French language instruction curriculums Sep 17, 2009
After English, French is perhaps the most world-wide of the European languages. "First Start French: Student Edition" is a specifically designed set of language instruction exercises designed by Danielle L. Schultz as an introduction to mastering the French language for children at grade levels three through eight. In addition to teaching the basics of French grammar, "First Start French" provides fluency with respect to developing a large and practical vocabulary, develop basic conversational skills when speaking French, translating and reading French, and even presents an informed introduction to French culture through 'user friendly' worksheet assignments. A highly recommended addition to private and public school French language instruction curriculums. Memoria Press also has available an accompanying "First Start French: Teacher's Edition" and a "First Start French" CD containing the 36 lessons of the book edition, plus Fere Jacques; Tetes, Epoules, Genoux, Pieds; Airisi Font, Font, Font; Alouette; Au Clair de la Lune; Sur le Pont d'Avignon; and a Pronunciation Guide.

I am a veteran homeschooler, familiar with French. I waited for this program with high hopes, but was disappointed and abandoned it halfway through the year. There are not enough exercises to cement the concepts and I spent a lot of time creating extra assignments. The author suggests the teacher drill the students with extra assignments; it would have been very helpful if the author had provided them, especially for those who do not already know some French. The oral component on the CD is too brief. French students need to hear French, not just work short written exercises. It would have been much more helpful to have more than just the vocabulary and brief grammar concepts recited on the CD. Students need a variety of sentences to listen to for each lesson. I went back to using RosettaStone to my children's relief. First Start French explained the grammar (conjugation of verbs, for example) but RosettaStone gave them understanding, drill and pronunciation.
