Item description for What Are We Hoping For?: New Testament Images by Daniel J. Harrington...

Overview
Scripture scholar and author, Daniel J. Harrington, SJ, explores fifteen images of hope in each of the following: Matthew's Gospel, Paul's Letter to the Romans, and the Book of Revelation. Chosen because they are among the longest, most influential, and most difficult texts of the New Testament, these three very different books begin with the hope that the newborn Jesus will be "Emmanuel, God with us" and end with the plea, "Come, Lord Jesus." Harrington, editor of Liturgical Press' best-selling Sacra Pagina series, writes this book not so much for biblical specialists as for the general public. The author's popular and prayerful approach considers forty-five images of hope-from star, water, and rock through childbirth, body, and house to scroll, woman, and beast. In an age when hope seems to be in short supply, here is a book that will give fresh insight and energy to all who "wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ."

Reviews - What do customers think about What Are We Hoping For? New Testament Images?

Scripture as a Source of Hope Today  Oct 30, 2006
The author, a professor of New Testament at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., presents examples of the theological virtue of hope from three books of the New Testament: the Gospel of Matthew, Paul's Letter to the Romans, and Revelation. In the introduction, Harrington explains that these very different books underscore the ultimate Christian hope for right relationship with God, eternal life with God, and the fullness of God's reign. His audience is the general public; his format combines modern biblical scholarship with "the needs and interests of people today, who live in a world where hope often seems in short supply."

The material is divided into three parts, each consisting of a brief overview of the New Testament book and 15 images of hope that Harrington has drawn from it. For every image he provides background, explanation, and reflection on the chosen text. A short synthesis under the heading "reasons for hope" concludes the discussion.

For the image of "rock" from Matthew 16:13-20, Harrington chooses the 18th verse, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." He focuses our attention on the stability, strength, and permanence of rock, then offers several Old Testament quotations featuring this image. Next he analyzes and reflects on the passage from Matthew, establishing that Peter is "both a model of Christian hope and an object of hope." He then reminds us that with God `s guidance the once impulsive and wavering Peter was transformed into the rock on which the Church was built: "The ultimate source of Christian hope is the crucified and risen Jesus, and therefore there is hope for us all."
