Item description for Dangerous Blessing: The Emergence of a Postmodern Faith by Wipf & Stock...
Postmodernism has been both heralded and hated, accepted and denounced. But which is the proper response? Is it an impetus to spiritual revival or an invitation to sinister deception? Carmen C. DiCello points out that Christians must "examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21) while remaining alert to potential hazards. Steering clear of extremes, this book offers an approach to postmodernism in which believers can justly resist its darker elements while embracing its more noble ones. Postmodernism is best seen as a "Dangerous Blessing."

Reviews - What do customers think about Dangerous Blessing: The Emergence of a Postmodern Faith?
An Absolute Masterpiece! Jan 28, 2007
A must read for anyone who is interested in postmodernism. This reader found Dr. Dicello's book extremely intriguing, enlightening, and well synthesized, leaving the reader yearning for more. Dr. Dicello simultaneously keeps an open-mind and remains vigilant from beginning to end. An absolute masterpiece!
The much needed "shock," freeing modern static. Nov 23, 2005
Community is a group of people in a specific region who share common interests. This book services an area which is an aggregate of people in many settings. It plays an active role in this community by preparing competent Christians to practice in this era. It is the responsibility of the auther to be knowledgeable about the concerns of the community it (the book) serves, and to establish working relationships--and this he does well. The quotes preceding/parceling each chapter are profound. The arguements developed are geared towards an affinity with/towards Jesus Christ. Dr. DiCello wonderfully delineates and demarcates the post-modern era. Rather than a unilateral approach, his discernment securely takes an unbiased stance. In no way does "Dangerous Blessing" interpolate, extract from, jeopardize, or compromise Biblical Scripture--it simply advocates a deeper embrace of it (Holy Bible).
balance on this topic Sep 22, 2005
Dr. Dicello gives a fast-paced review of church history with its philosophically driving forces for each epoch of history. Then with continued cogency, he brings the reader face to face with the prevailing philosophical influence that drives our modern society: Postmodernism.
Postmodernism-sometimes seen as a philosophical panacea, sometimes as the 21st century boogie man-is here and it is a major influence in the church as well as in society at large.
So, is Postmodernism good or bad? The author clearly answers this question: "Yes."
In scholarly fashion, Dr. Dicello explains that Postmodernism can be good and bad, and Christians in particular and the church in general must learn to discern and embrace what God is doing within Postmodernism while at the same time learn to discern and denounce what is contrary to solid, orthodox Christianity.
In brief, Dr. Dicello shows that there is much to contend with in Postmodernism and that there is much to embrace. Not leaving his readers in a state of anomie, Dr. Dicello helps the reader to discern which is which.
A better balance on this topic I have not yet encountered.

A balanced look at faith in today's world Sep 9, 2005
If you want your students or congregation to get a handle on the slippery subject of postmodernism, there is no better place to start than with this book. Dangerous Blessing provides many helpful insights into the strange world of postmodernity. DiCello helps readers to recognize the perils that abound, yet he does so in a way that does not reject the benefits. I can't think of a more apt title, nor a more balanced examination of faith in today's society.

A Very Balanced Approach to Postmodernism Sep 9, 2005
In a rapidly changing world it is important for Christians to be able to sift through societal trends with both caution and openness. Certain evangelicals have overreacted to cultural change, rejecting anything that doesn't fit the traditional paradigm. Others treat postmodernism as the "best thing since sliced bread". Dangerous Blessing reflects a better way, advocating an approach in which the dangers are duly noted and the blessings are actively pursued. Few treatments of this subject are so wise. Thank you Dr. DiCello! I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in exploring what God is doing in this generation without compromising in the truth of God's word!
