More About Dan Wettlin
Dan Wettlin, Jr. was born in Kearny, N.J. on March 25, 1916. He spent most of his boyhood in the South Jersey town of Haddonfield where he graduated from high school in 1933 with a scholarship to Temple University. Depression finances prevented college attendance, and for 2 years he engaged in numerous activities including door-to-door salesman, jeweler's apprentice, reporter and publisher of a weekly newspaper.
In the mid-30s, he became associated with a Philadelphia advertising agency, and later became Media Director. Prior to Pearl Harbor, he organized his own advertising agency in Camden, N.J. and became closely associated with future New Jersey Governor Alfred E. Driscoll.
Following Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for three and a half years. While in the Marines, he met and married his wife, Hazel, who was also a Marine. He was the first Marine in the history of the Corps to be authorized to marry another Marine! They have two sons, Dan III and Ward.
While his sons were still young they became near-champion speed swimmers in the AAU-YMCA age group swim team groups. Wettlin was active in organizing and running age group champion swim meets.
Following WWII, he became President of the New Jersey Milk Industry Association and shortly thereafter opened his own firm, Wettlin Associates, from which he represented and managed several industry associations. He became known as the leading milk industry sales and PR authority, and was listed in "Who's Who in the East; "Who's Who in Business and Industry; and "Dictionary of International Biography. His book entitled "Dear Milkman records the closeness housewives felt for their homedelivery milkmen in the intimacy of their voluminous notes they wrote them.
Wettlin is now a widower and currently lives in Cross Creek, a golf course community in Fort Myers, FL, where for 12 years he served as the community's director and president. He resigned those responsibilities in 2004.
