Pretty Good Mar 29, 2008
The book was good, if a little naive. The suggestions for devotionals are not possible for many people, though they are for me. I can't imagine an inner city single mom being able to take long walks in the woods and sit on a rock in the middle of a mountain brook, worshipping God. It sounds wonderful and I'm grateful for the opportunity to live in the woods, too, but that is a unique blessing not available to many. Sounds like a minor point, but the whole first half of the book is composed of similar things. For example, I have no idea where to even find an all-night prayer meeting in my area and if I did, I simply could not find the time to attend all the other events proposed as common to small-group leaders and do all the stuff all good small-group leaders apparently do. It's fine for a full-time small-groups minister, but most of us have other jobs and still need to pay attention to our families.
The second half of the book was better and I found it very helpful. I would buy the book again--I felt it was worth the money spent and the time to read it, but I have to honestly say I was mildly disappointed.
For those of you who, like me, are not a part of "generation x", you may find the format of this book a little busy with side bars, graphics, etc., it looks like a web page. This annoys me, but I can ignore it if the info is worth it. The series, taken as a whole, is worth buying, but if you want to purchase only one book, I would recommend Bill Donahue's "Leading Life Changing Small Groups" from Willow Creek Church.
Comprehensive Help for leading a Small Group Ministry May 21, 2007
I edited this book and the Small Group Help Guides series it is a part of. I've worked with Dan for nearly 10 years in small group ministry. I first met Dan through the online small groups ministry I founded, SmallGroups.com. Dan worked with me for several years, and then took it over as the Director in 1999. Dan and I have enjoyed working together and discussing many of the concepts he put forth in this great book.
Let's Get Started helps the reader think through all the questions about starting, restarting, and administering a small group ministry. Whether you are just getting started in small group ministry or have been at it for awhile, as I have, Dan's work will help you carry out the small group ministry in your church.
Many of the other books on this topic provide one model for doing small groups; they sell you on their philosophy and tell you how to implement it in your church. Instead, Dan helps you make those decisions for yourself, based on all the factors you need to consider in your circumstances. Dan's wealth of experience and knowledge as a small groups leader and minister, church planter, speaker, writer, and entrepreneur will help you lead your small groups ministry to greater fruitfulness and multiplication.
