Item description for Through the Valley of Tears by Cyril J. Barber...
But why write another book about grief? Surely enough has already been said on the subject. To answer this question let me explain how and why this book came to be written. During the time I worked as a senior pastoral counselor on the staff of Insight for Living, I had as a colleague Sharee Aspenleiter. Sharee had lost her husband a few years earlier. One day she challenged me with the need of a book for widows and widowers. As we talked over what she felt was a gaping void in the literature she had read, I found that there was still lurking in her heart the lingering hurt and loneliness felt by so many whom have lost someone of emotional significance to them. This includes not only the eight million widows and three and a half million widowers in the United States at the present time, but also children who have suffered the loss of a father or mother, or parents who have lost a child. And then there are the relatives and friends whose lives are now emptier and sadder because someone who was dear to them has been taken from them. And not to be forgotten are those individuals--still living--and their families who have recently heard from their physician that their illness is incurable with the result that their life or the life of someone close to them is now being numbered in weeks or months instead of years. Theirs is often an unheard cry for help, compassion and understanding.
And then theres the need to explain the Christians hope and the way an understanding of the Bibles teaching can help us cope with our feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt, and loneliness.
Sharees words stuck in my mind so tenaciously that I could not dislodge them. Finally, wondering what God might be trying to say to me, I decided to pray about the matter. As I did so I felt the first inklings of the Lords leading me to write this book--a distinctive work that would be different from the usual self-disclosure kind (i.e., the kind in which a person tells of what happened to me when my husband/wife, son/daughter, father/mother died), but one containing counsel based solidly on the Scriptures.
