Reviews - What do customers think about Down to Earth: Celebrating a Blessed Life on the Land?

Perfect title ...  May 19, 2008
This book IS down to earth. It's spiritual reading without the feeling of preachiness or superiority. How do you live your faith day to day? Curt shows us how planting rows, fixing tractors, and raising talkative kids in church can be just as full of divinity as spending hours in the pew or on your knees. I loved this book because I believe true spirituality is taking your faith into every moment of your day, even the moment when mud is falling on your face.

I have to admit, I grew up with Curt, but I haven't lived in Crofton for over 20 years. His book took me directly back. His accounts of our teachers and priests were spot-on. We even lined up in grade school to kiss our beloved Sister Veronica on the the cheek the last day of school. These are beautiful memories for me, little gems from the past. Thanks for putting all this into words, Curt. I may not be a farmer, but I have a little garden now, and I can learn a lot from you.

Praying for Rain  Apr 8, 2008
A new entry in the American Catholic Experience series, Down to Earth is the story of Curt Arens, a Nebraska farmer. Arens, who freelances as an agricultural journalist, recounts his family's American farming tradition, which began in 1867 when his great-great-grandparents migrated from Germany. In the telling, Arens reveals the connections between Church, family, and work over the years. "My spiritual life and my occupation are molded together in a way that cannot be separated," he writes.
"There is no greater faith than placing a tiny seed in the soil, counting on the miracle of life to germinate and produce grain so that the farm family can make a living." The chronicle includes stories of faith through the Great Depression, birth and death, hardship, and joy. "Half my childhood was spent praying for rain," Arens says. "The other half was spent praying we wouldn't be hailed out."

He credits his teachers at St. Rose elementary school with instilling in him faith, values, and a sense of responsibility. His ancestors helped build the school in 1911. Now his children attend and his wife is on the faculty. The values he learned at school and home strengthened as he and his St. Rose friends made their way through the public high school. At the University of Nebraska Arens bonded quickly with other Catholic students, arranging carpools to Mass and forming a weekly dorm bible study group. At the same time, he was exposed to anti-Catholic bias that led him to look more deeply into his own beliefs and come out closer to Christ.

In the book Arens occasionally provides information on the physical and economic burdens on today's farm families. He also addresses Catholic social teaching and ethical land stewardship in the face of rapid industrial changes in agriculture. The way he sees it, God is calling him and his neighbors "to roll up our sleeves and promote positive changes in our little corner of creation."
