Some Good Material May 15, 2010
There are some good examples in this book of people who have overcome challenges to accomplish their goals in various arenas. The book is divided into devotional type units that can be read independently, in no particular order. Each segment's thought includes a Scripture and illustration.
Crouch is a master communicator. His way with words facilitates learning the principles he presents. A few excerpts make the point: "champions...trust God while others ask for answers" (p. 160). "The world is full of willing people, some willing to work, the others willing to let them" (p. 154). "When somebody says they need to refer to a committee before making a decision, you have the wrong person" (p. 138).
If I had not read Crouch's more recent book, "Dare to Succeed" I would have been more impressed with this one. A substantial amount of the two books is identical. Another weakness is in some of the people he holds up as role models. Oprah Winfrey and Clarence Darrow do not share the believes of orthodox Christians, yet in Crouch's book they're praised as leaders to be emulated. I find that odd.
Crouch is a gifted humorist. His jokes achieve the desired effect. He makes a serious point through this audience-endearing approach. There are more positives than negatives to the book and even if you've purchased them both, repetition can help reinforce the material.
