Satirist and chronicler of the many-faceted world of education in Nigeria, the author is one of Nigeria's foremost writers. In this novel, he tells of Obuechina, the only brother of six older sisters, prize pupil in the village school, apple of his doting mother's eye, eight years old and hopelessly spoilt. In a vain attempt to salvage his character, his father decides he must be sent away as a servant to a schoolmaster with a dragon of a wife. Obu goes - and comes back very different.

Most Inspirational. Nov 11, 2003
I read this book while in secondary school in Nigeria. It touched deeply enough that over 20 years after, l am currently looking for an edition to give to my eldest son, whom l love very much and would like to learn about the experiences of children growing up in colonial Nigeria. In other words, help him appreciate his opportunities in a western society.

THIS WAS A GREAT GREAT BOOK. I read it many years ago, i believe in 1978/79 while i was in high school in Nigeria, and I am currently looking for it so my children will also have the experience. It is a true and good example of colonialism in Nigeria done in a very very humorous fashion. Gives great insight as to how many people got educated and were able to move on in life despite having incredibly poor beginnings. i highly recommend this book.
