Reviews - What do customers think about Church History 101: A Concise Overview?
Concise and well-written Apr 4, 2010
Bellitto crams 2000 years of Church history into approximately 140 pages, broken into four chapters: The Early Church, The Medieval Church, The Reformation Church, and The Modern Church. Each chapter is further broken into four sections providing four different perspectives on the timeframe in question: The Big Picture, The Church's Hierarchy, The Church in the Pews, and What Makes This Period Unique? Each chapter also begins with a timeline showing other well-known historical events that occurred in the same era. Obviously a terrific amount of information must be left out in order to live up to the title's advertisement of "concise." However, I was amazed at the detail included on some topics such as the many heresies addressed in the early church. Also, the author provides clear explanations of many church councils including why they were called, what decisions were made, and the lasting impact thereafter. Make no mistake, this is written by a Roman Catholic author for a Roman Catholic audience. Although more detailed history could be found elsewhere, this is the most scholarly 140 pages you are likely to find. My wife and I read this to each other over the course of a day and a half and were both very impressed. Highly recommended. I will be checking out the author's other offerings.
