Reviews - What do customers think about Getting To Know You: A Journal for Expecting Parents?
Excellent framework Jan 9, 2007
Using the questions provided on each page of this journal has really helped me open up and write to the baby yet to come. My husband and I have both enjoyed writing in the book, and look forward to it become a treasure for him/her for years to come.
Thoughtful Gift for Yourself or Someone You Love Nov 9, 2006
There are an abundance of books that provide women and their partners an opportunity to learn about pregnancy. "GETTING TO KNOW YOU" is also about learning but the learning occurs through self-reflection. Each provides a "starter sentence" that inspires a stream of thoughts, feelings, and emotions to be captured in words, drawings, or mementos on each page.
Since this journal is created to be carried and written in, even when you are on the "go" or at any time during the pregnancy (see page ix), inviting the writer to quiet and focus themselves even amidst daily tasks, like a doctor's visit. In essence, "GETTING TO KNOW YOU" is an opportunity for your child in later years (think teenager angst and disconnect) to intimately get to know you from your act of preserving the "prequel" to their life - and what is lovelier than that!
My only criticism is that it refers to "mommy" and "daddy" throughout the book. And we all know families can now publicly consist of two (or one) mommies, daddies, unrelated guardians, a grandma/pa and a mommy/daddy, etc... This choice is understandable given the publishing company and the audience trying to be reached. I just think the opportunity for a larger, more diverse audience, to benefit from this beautiful and thoughtful book is being missed. Even so, I have purchased four of the books - two for friends (one single and one not) who are currently pregnant and two for those future mommies! Highly recommended.
I would love to see a similar journal for people looking to adopt.
What a great idea! Nov 3, 2006
When you are pregnant is the best time to write and take the time to process so many new feelings. As a journaler and writing teacher, I know the value of writing things down as they come. Once the baby arrives, there can sometimes be precious little time to journal. All of the feelings of being expectant are so important. Even better, I love the format of this book and the way Christine gives time and place for the "We" in the baby's life because baby's father/husband is part of the process of writing to contribute thoughts. This is my new favorite gift for new moms! Thank you, Christine!
