Reviews - What do customers think about Faith And Pop Culture (Christianity Today)?

Christianity Today Study Series: Faith and Pop Culture Review  Dec 7, 2009
This book asks questions about what it looks like for a Christian to engage culture. It covers the main topics of art, literature, sports, TV, movies and how the Christian should interpret and engage with these culturally prevalent topics. It does not necessarily paint things in black or white but tries to challenge the reader to see how each of these areas can be used to bring God glory. It recognizes the depravity that is inherent in the endeavors of people while using questions to help you think about what this looks like in your own life. This book would be great for teaching a series or for self-study. There are a variety of questions and follow-up stories that would be helpful for a variety of people. This book challenged me to be more discerning in the way I read, watch, listen and play. This book helps combine biblical truth with modern-day dilemmas.

Don't you DARE!  Sep 22, 2009
This eight-week Bible study boldly broaches the subject matter of how believers should respond or be a part of the pop culture today. Asking questions about whether believers should watch R-rated movies, certain television shows, listen to a particular genre of music, this study invokes deeper study and much discussion.

Designed for small group study, the material is designed to create a certain tension and provoke discussion. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're willing to examine why you believe what you do under the microscope of scripture and share what you learn with others, then this study is for you. I believe that, as is true with any good Bible study, participants will not walk away the from it the same way they began.

In my book, that makes it great.

An Important Discussion To Have  Sep 2, 2009
It used to be that one would seek out culture...a night at the opera, a trip to the museum. Now, culture is forced down our throats. Netflix delivers our movies to our mailbox and our laptop. iTunes downloads the latest music in a flash. Hundreds of TV channels screaming their version of "reality".

What is our response as Christians? Does it even matter anymore?

If you're interested in discussing these questions in a small group or class setting, "Faith and Pop Culture" from Christianity Today is a good place to start.

The book is laid out in eight chapters. The first four cover movies, books, sports, and television. The second four move into larger discussions of violence, "family friendly" entertainment, and Christian influence in the entertainment industries.

The format of each study is familiar "small group" territory; icebreakers, study and discussion questions, and follow-up activities. What sets this study apart is Christianity Today's access to a stellar lineup of screenwriters, authors, professors, and theologians - including the excellent Jeffrey Overstreet (the author of the must-read "Through A Screen Darkly").

The discussions questions are well-written, and careful not to take a stand on one opinion or the other. Scripture references are plentiful and appropriately enlightening to the subject matter. The group participants are encouraged to think for themselves and reach their own conclusions.

In short, this study is an excellent place to begin this very important discussion. I'll be suggesting it to my own small group.

A worthwhile look at an important topic  Aug 31, 2009
Faith and pop culture is a study on how Christians should respond to popular culture, focusing particularly on movies, books, sports, television and video games
Each study begins with an article from Christianity today magazine relevant to the topic. This is followed by fun questions for getting to know other group members, discussion questions about the article and questions about a bible text on the topic.
The topic is a great one for Christians to be studying. Too many Christians take the extremes of embracing everything popular culture (and often the messages that come with it) or at the other end of rejecting completely all entertainment that lacks a strongly religious message. Thankfully the book avoids both. The article in session five from a Christian responsible for reviewing mainstream films is particularly good food for thought on the topic of discernment. I also think it is good that the book also includes the topic of sport. It doesn't normally seem to get taken into account as part of Christian discussions on entertainment.
The book is designed for group study but I used it for individual study. While you would probably skip the some of the introductory questions, most of the other questions would be suitable for working through on your own. You might consider using the questions as a starting point for journaling.

Good Starting Point for an Important Discussion  Aug 17, 2009
This book is a bit different than one that I would usually review. It's more of a discussion guide on the issue than anything, intended to provide the meat for group discussion.

Faith and Pop Culture is divided into 8 chapters, ranging from sports to television to movies with questionable content to violent video games. In each section, there was an article that would provide the jumping off point for the discussion, which would be followed by ice breaker activities, discussion questions, and relevant scriptural references.

I think that the issues in this book are ones that we need to be discussing. While the older generations in today's church gravitate towards the Hollywood-is-bad mentality, the younger ones gravitate towards the Hollywood-is-cool mindset. Neither is correct, and as Christians we need to come to a Biblical understanding on how we can/must relate to pop culture. This issue is not going to go away anytime soon.

While I don't know that I agree with where some of the articles were heading (particularly the one addressing "Must all entertainment Christians enjoy be 'family friendly'?"...it seemed to leave out the idea of worldview) I believe that these are a great place to start a discussion on these issues. If I were to lead a discussion on these issues, I probably would use this book and supplement it with articles/books with other view points. Regardless, these are issues that should not be ignored.
