Item description for Jonathan Edwards: America's Genius (Trailblazers) by Christian George...

Overview
Jonathan Edwards was just an ordinary American boy but he was different too. The country he lived in wasnt the America of today but a new world full of adventure and opportunity. Battles and Tomahawks were just some of the thrilling adventures that his family lived through. But Jonathan also loved the small things in life too. In an age of scientific discovery, Edwards saw Gods beauty displayed most perfectly through nature. His journals are filled with drawings of plants, animals, and spiders because he knew that each one of them reflected the creativity of its Creator. His mind was full of questions and he grappled for the answers. Intellectually there were few to beat him. However it wasnt just his amazing intelligence that set him apart from other boys his age he may have had a thirst for knowledge but he also had a strong desire for the things of God. His genius and abilities teamed up well with his faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. One day the country that would become the United States of America would look back at this man of brilliance as a founding influence on their land.

Reviews - What do customers think about Jonathan Edwards: America's Genius (Trailblazers)?

A Godly Life Revealed  Feb 2, 2010
Born in 1703, Jonathan Edwards was to become a great leader in America's religious landscape of the mid 1700's during the time of The Great Awakening. His most famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," was first preached in 1741. In this brief biography written with 9-14 year olds in mind, you will gain insight into the life of this influential preacher through imagined dialogue based on direct quotes and actual events. You will get a picture of what it must have been like to live during the 1700's and what the prevailing attitudes of the day were. As you might imagine, people had told him not to talk about hell so much, but it was his boldness and his great faith that molded his character and leadership.

In this biography you will also learn about his courtship and marriage to Sarah and how she supported and encouraged him in his ministry. She was well-read and quite knowledgeable of the Bible. She brought issues of concern to his attention such as the practice of what was then called "bundling" among the teenagers within their own congregation where several teenagers, male and female get into bed together with all their clothes on and fall asleep. As soon as it was brought to Jonathan's attention he readily addressed it with his congregation. You will also see a bit of his concern and interest with the Mohawk Indians and see how he interacted with and lead his family in faithfulness. Because some of the themes, such as "bundling" mentioned above, are addressed in this book, some parents may wish to consider this book as reading for children on the older end of the recommended age-range.

The book itself contains a timeline and brief follow-up for further thought and discussion at the end which is quite helpful for parents and children to go over the material together. You will also find a few pages detailing quotes or paraphrases of Jonathan Edwards and a detailed bibliography.
